I need some help trying to check/adjust timing on a 96 bronco with a 351. I am unable to locate the timing marks or the SPOUT connector on my Bronco. I assume that the timing is adjustable (mabey it's not and that is why I am having such a problem). I have a Haynes manual. I can locate some graduated marks on the assembly on the end of the driveshaft. I cannot make out all of the markings, I see a 10 and some other marks. I dont see any scale on the timing chain cover or a single mark on the dampner as described in the haynes book. I also can't seem to locate the SPOUT connector. I have been looking for a capped off wiring connector. Any help is greatly appreciated!
On my old, 95 F150 5.0 the spout connector was over on the drivers side fender well, there should be a timming tab on the front cover down close to the balancer pulley, get a wrag and wipe it of look good. DW
Only the "base" timing can be set in your truck. The SPOUT connector disconnects the timing control circuit from the computer so that the initial (base) timing can be set. Normally this is approximately 10 degrees BTDC (before top dead center). I can't stress this enough....CHECK the decal under the hood for the correct procedure and base timing setting.
The SPOUT connector is a small rectangular grey connector near the ignition control module on the drivers side inner fender with two pink wires running from/to it. Follow the underhood instructions for performing this base timing setting.
The timing marks are stamped into the harmonic balancer on the front of the crankshaft behind the main pulley. You may need to clean the balancer to see the marks. As DW said the indicator should be a tab and just above it, another tab with a hole in it mounted to the timing cover just off the passenger side of the cover. I use a white paint pen to highlight the 10 degree BTDC mark on the balancer so I can see it easily with the engine spinning.
Thanks for the information. I've seen the markings on the harmonic balancer and the indicator. This isn't the arrangement I am used to seeing. I should be able to find the SPOUT connector now.
Interesting twist, according to the decal under the hood the timing is not adjustable. Guess this explains why the SPOUT connector is so hard to locate.
The SPOUT connector is only ~1" from the ignition module connector under the L hood hinge, but it's taped onto the wiring harness so you have to look for the lump. The timing is adjustable, but they don't want anyone adjusting it. It should always stay at 10°BTDC.
Thanks for the help. Located the SPOUT wrapped up in the wiring harness near the ignition module. Would have never found it without you pointing it out. Checked timing, was at about 6 deg BTC. Changed to 10 deg BTC. Engine running great now. Had a some lag at low RPMs when accelerating , adjusting the timing seems to have corrected it.
