When attending various community events such as Memorial Day where there are flag raising ceremonies and the national anthem being played, what is the correct flag protocol for non-armed forces citizens? Does the citizen just stand and watch or is it appropriate for the citizen to salute the flag as a service member would?
Additional thought...what about public safety? Alot of times I see LEO's salute during the National Anthem and such like at NASCAR races and so on. What is the protocol for first responders? Thanks for the info!
Military, police and fireman in uniform are expected to salute.
Generally speaking a show of respect is expected. Standing quietly and facing the flag will seldom be considered disrespectful. Talking, laughing, facing away from the flag or general grab-assing or allowing your children to do such would be improper and disrespectful.
Having said that, it is not our job to be flag police. Starting an argument with some *** during the pledge or anthem will distract from the ceremony and should be avoided. Afterwards ? your call.
