Aftermarket Distributor Warning

I'm going to try to do this without writing a book. When I rebuilt my 351 Cleveland I wanted a Duraspark instead of points. Since the same distributor also fits 351M/400/460's that was easy. I got a new Cardone from Summit. While running the engine in, about 20 minutes into the run, we lost the #1 intake lobe. Of course that required a complete teardown to replace the bearings, oil pump and cam and lifters. Since it was a new cam I was also going to replace the distributor gear. I had never checked the gear location on the distributor before I installed it. As the picture shows even though this gear was running in metal mud there isn't a scratch on the bottom of it where it is suppose to set on the block. It was .015 short of where it should have been. I sent it back. I then purchase a Spectra, same thing gear not installed correctly. Duralast same thing. Remanufactured Cardone same thing. After three new and one reman distributors all with the gears on short of where they should have been I bought a NOS Motorcraft on e-bay, it was perfect.
If you get a new or reman distributor check the gear location before you install it.
