I'm looking to buy a grille guard for my truck - had a ranch hand on my 05 Sierra and really liked it. I want to maintain my factory tow hooks though. Any recommendations on guards? Also, does the "screen" that is on some guards really affect gas mileage but cutting back air flow? I'm looking at a Westin HDX. Any thoughts? Advice? Thanks
Looking at the same grille guard my self. Did you ever get one and if so how do you like it? Had wondered if the mesh on the Westin was necessary to reinforce the guard or if I should look for something different. Want something that will take a small whitetail hit without folding up into the fenders and causing even more damage.
Mine is the Ranch Hand. It maintains factory tow hooks. I was also able to run it with a front mount hitch in place (my license plate is on a receiver mount up front). I haven't notice any difference in fuel mileage because of the grille guard mesh...but I don't pay much attention to fuel mileage. I can't imagine it being noticeable on these trucks.
I will say this...I am not a huge fan of the look (this guard was given to me), but it certainly was functional when a lady pulled out in front of me in a car. I hit her and not a bit of damage...not even a scratch for me. Not so lucky for her. It was a low speed hit...probably 25-30 mph because I hit my brakes...but it did the job.
You know, the Ranch Hand looks alot like the Westin HDX. Your durability review sounds like what I'm looking for. Will check local and see if they have or carry the Ranch Hand. Looks to be similarly priced. Want to be sure to keep my tow hooks, they are very useful all winter where I live.

Look on Craigslist too. I see them here all the time for $200.
