I can't find locally, either through my local Ford dealer (too old) or two local parts suppliers the sending unit for the midship tank (not listed). The rear one is easily available but will no fit unless I cut the locator tabs and install it 90 degrees and even then.
Here are the trucks specs.
1997, F350 XL, crew cab, long box (logger's box), 351 Windsor, 5 speeds
The mid tank is already out of it, I can get a replacement tank and pump, no problem. My question would any other year or model fit, that can possibly be sourced locally? I would rather avoid the wreckers for this part.
I'm reasoning any Fx50 '97 sending unit for a 5.8 would be all the same, same engine fuel pressure requirements, or I'm I missing something
The rear tank was not working before I got the truck, so I figure I'd get the front one fixed before getting into the rear one and the possibility of a bad tank switch.
I've been a mechanic for some years now and this is the first time I get this problem, it was easier to find parts for a '56 Ford pick up than to get this part or a part number for it.
I can't see them being vastly different. I installed a rear fuel delivery module (FDM) out of an F250 into my F150; part numbers did not match but the only difference was a slight change in the fuel feed and return tube positions. The bends were slightly off. I tweaked them a bit and it fit just fine. I wonder if the front tank's FDM is similar? Could you bring your existing front FDM to the parts house for a direct comparison to any other Fx50's front FDM that they have in stock?
This pic is of my 96' F150 front FDM installed, truck has a 5.8L. I have a flatbed so easy access. Does your F350's front FDM look the same?
Never noticed until looking at that picture, but it looks like I pinched the vent line under the cross member last time I had that tank out. Oops.
I recall seeing different sized tanks in the various trucks, in the owner's manual. They differ by a gallon or so best I remember. Maybe the pickups are slightly different?
Thanks for your reply, unfortunately the original unit is long gone. Looking at the picture it looks the same, I'll go back to the parts store and see what is available and make it fit.
There are two different tank sizes listed, 16 and 19 gallons.
My manual shows all gas engine 1997 F350s that had the optional mid-ship tank were rated at 19 gallons regardless of wheelbase length/cab configuration.
