Try your best to get oil on the face of the bearings but don't get any oil on the back side. You could stray out to say, .0022 on a rod bearing if it had no taper in it, .003 on a main would still work.

Well, I did change all the main bearings with the engine in truck. And even plastigaged the bearing clearances. But the real problems started when I decided to change the rear main seal-upper half. Couldn't get the seal out. Ended up pulling the engine, doing the bearings on a stand, and reinstalling. There's another thread on that.
