It's not a really big problem it's just that I can remove my keys after starting my truck, not that it's a problem. I wanted to know if there is a quick and easy fix for it any help is appreciated
Id say the tumblers inside the switch are worn . Go to Ford & you can get a replacement along with 2 new keys . To replace it you turn the key to run , Under the key on the steering column you will see a small hole , Use a pick to push in on the pin at the center of the hole , Once you feel the pin push in you can remove the switch , it will slide out with the key , dont turn it back to off . The new switch should come with the pin already pushed in , If not , do the same to it , insert the key , turn it to run & push the pin in . Now slide the new key & switch in & turn it to Off , that releases the pin & locks the switch into the column .
Problem?
My old Cougar did the same thing and I actually liked it.
It's great when you want to run into the store quick
and leave it running. (lock the doors)
My '92 does the same thing, I suspect the switches they put in the trucks with manual transmissions aren't as heavy duty as the switches they put in the trucks with auto's. I'm looking to replace mine, and was wondering how expensive the part is, and can the switch be ordered so it's the same key for my doors, too?? Any info is appreciated
I can do that with my truck too, but only if i don't put the key in all the way. You know how when you put the key in you can feel it notching, well if i leave the last notch out i can turn the switch and pull the key out, but if i push it in all the way i cant get the key out, its a nice feature i think ha.
Sometimes you only need to get a new key. I had this happen on an old 83 a few years ago. The key just wears down from the in and out friction. I would try another key, like your spare, that is less warn.
Might save you some bucks.:P
On most all earlier model Ford vehicle , The Door Key & the Ignition Key are seperate , The new key switch is inexpensive . You can even purchase them aftermarket if you dont want to pay the $25 from Ford .
I tried to buy an ignition cylinder lock at the dealer but they say I have to buy a kit that includes two door locks as well. I don't need the door locks Any suggestions on how I can get it separately? Last resort will be to get the kit but how difficult is it to swap door locks out? Thanks!

Just out of curiousity, how expensive was this kit? It didn't seem hard when my brother and I swapped doors on his '85 Ford F-350, the old ones were rusted out so we put new doors on and painted it to match, and we swapped all the hardware. It's not that big of project, though I haven't looked behind the trim panel on my '92 F-150, it probably entails removing the insulator plastic and removing a few nuts and changing it out. I'd say do it, just so all the locks match. Give me an update what you decide, because I have the same problem!! Have a great day!!!
Ford wants $81.00 for the kit. The moderator said it should be around $25.00 for just the ignition. I dunno ... maybe I'll break down and just get the kit.
I still hope to find just the ignition cylinder.
Thanks,
John

My local parts chimp has the ignition cylinder only for about $12.
I did this job last summer in about a half hour on my '89 F-250.
The secret hole is non-existant on this year, so ya' gotta' pull the wheel.
Guess this might be my contribution to the "content" that will help
keep the "list" going. Ken, I still prefer it the other way. One could get lost over here.
