I disagree with all the people saying 3.08s + M5OD. If you don't consider starting from a stop on a grade or backing up part of towing then go for it but IMO you want deeper gears. Sure you can make do but that doesn't make it nice. I might just be underestimating the weight of everything I move but I have 3.08s and often toss what I think is between 1k and 2k in the bed and I wouldn't want to have to back that up a hill with a manual without deeper gears.
I tow and haul with my truck but 3k and no deep gears with 3.08s sounds like a very bad time.

The very first vehicle I ever owned was a hand-me-down f250 with a 300 zf5 i6 and it got 11 no matter how I drove it.
The truck in my sig gets 12.5-13 with military 37s....with stock tires I'd be absolutely killing it in the mpg department. I can't wait to see how my 97 does with a similar/better build.
My 4x4 + E4OD in that configuration will net 19-21mpg highwat (my best is 20.8 IIRC, it may have been 20.9 though) on relatively flat ground (east coast) at 60ish with 29s or 31s and no air dam. I get a consistent 16-18mpg highway in the above situation with drive slugs installed. It drops to 14mpg if I drive at 75-85.
I get a consistent 14-16mpg around town and floor it a lot.

that's one of the most popular setups made.if not the most popular setup (save for 4wd part) they're everywhere.they made them by the thousands.
finding them with the mazda 5pd manual like your after is cake.if i wanted another,id want the E4OD and most 300/auto's didn't come with the hd auto but the light duty aod instead.
you'll have noooooooo trouble scoring one with the manual.
IIRC the 300 got the E4OD and the 302 got the AOD. The both got the M5OD if equipped with a manual.

Heavy tires are what kill mpg, not big tires. I just installed skid steer 31s on H1s. Ask me how I know.

yeah but remember he started out with MPG being a priority.

this meant higher gear gearing of 3:08 over ruled the better 3.55 performing gears.
things changed now however as he's looking at hd trucks with big blocks.talk about a complete 180 lol.
