Dont mean to hijack, but I was told that if you want an LSD on a Ford 9-inch, all you need is a different 3rd member. Is this true?
It could be accomplished one of two ways. You could swap the differential into your trucks existing 3rd member/rear end housing or, you could swap out the entire 3rd member in your existing rear end housing for one that has a Traction-Lok differential in it. --differentials/axles could be either 28-spline or 31-spline so, know what you have and what you're getting.
okay so it is as easy as everyone says, i've never done it before. i am going from a 3.00 to a 2.75, not because i want to but because i have to... i wish i had a 3.70
Not trying to insult you or anything, but do you for sure understand how gearing works? If you have 3.00's and are going to a 2.75.........but wish you had 3.70's.......I don't think you will like the results. Numerically lower means mechanically higher gears.
oh i know thats why i would like the 3.70, it would accelerate faster and launch harder. i have to go to the 2.75 because my 3.00 case is leaking do to a crack, and the 2.75 is all i have. i know that a 2.75 would probably be more wise in terms of highway driving, but in terms of a "Street truck" a 3.70 posi would be more "wise".
Ok....you understand.......just sometimes folks don't get it and I was just trying to help out.... LOL Like I said......I didn't want to insult your knowledge, hope you weren't offended!
no offence taken. i found out about gears the first hand in a sense, my buddy's chevy has 3.08's in it and with 29" tires he gets decent highway, his dad has a 81 Malibu wagon with 4.10's and 29" tires i think he is roughly 65ish mph at 3000rpm...
It shouldn't be a problem, but make sure the U-joint flange is the same. It should be a 1310, that's what probably 98% are, but every once in a while you'll run across a 1330.
, its not but i'm useing the drive shaft that came out of the truck that the third member came out of. 5 pints i though quarts... so i have 3 extra bottles.
so now that i have changed driveshaft and 3rd member out something is squeaking, it had done it with the old driveshaft i assumed that a u joint was going bad , now that the "new" driveshaft is in it is squeaking i think it may have a bad u-joint as well. could something else be squeaking? it was a 2 piece driveshaft with the small ujoint , the new is a one piece with the bigger size u-joints.
