Been trying to resurrect at 97 E350 V10 that sat for a couple of years. When I got it, it would start but would not run above idle. Cleaned the gas line and tank and replace the fuel pump and got it running. COPs had been changed, but not the plugs. Changed the plugs (and the PCV valve since I was in there) and it seemed to run pretty well but had an intermittent stumble at idle - it sometimes (but not always) got worse under a load. It was also throwing a P0401 code. So I changed the EGR valve and it idled great, but seemed to wander in RPM a bit on start up. Long story short, it tricked me into a test drive and quit as I was pulling into traffic. I was able to get it started and back the curb, but it doesn't want to run. The only other thing I did was clean the MAF sensor. What could I have done that would cause things to get far worse?
To answer both of the above: I did not check the fuel pressure and I did not clean or replace the IAC. After replacing the fuel pump and filter and cleaning the tank, the van ran, but it missed (big time) under a load. I then replaced the plugs (pretty sure they were original with 144K), and it ran pretty well, but when warm had a stumble at idle and SOMETIMES when under a load (seemed like more than a miss). So I replaced the EGR valve. It fired right up and idled fine. Then when I tried to drive it, it immediately quit. I was able to restart it, but had to do that three times just to get it to the curb. Will clean the IAC today and maybe replace the DPFE. Thanks!
New Fuel Filter. One thing that crossed my mind is that something I did in replacing the EGR valve caused a bigger problem. The only thing I can think of that might be related is I cleaned the MAF sensor. I am going to pull it out tonight and see if I somehow damaged it. I also wonder if it must be aligned to the airflow....
MAF was in sideways. Still initially ran poorly, but cleared up. It was throwing a P0102 code (low MAF input) but seemed to idle fine after about 15 sec. I am going to clear the code and see if it comes back. The EGR code is gone!
Finally threw in the towel and took the van into a shop here in town. The big problem was I got sloppy and didn't properly re-connect the intake tube to the throttle body when I fixed the MAF sensor. Solved many of the problems. It was still missing and the tech felt that the #2 COP needed to be replaced. Ran better and is pretty much drivable, but it misses bigtime at idle which really annoys me. Now throwing a P0310 code, so I am going to change the COP too. (All of the COPs were replaced by the PO about a year ago - turns out that getting good ones is important.)
Two new issues: Yesterday when I was headed uphill on our local cross bay bridge, it started missing like an entire bank was not firing. It cleared up after about 10 sec. What is upstream of the COPs that could cause that? Also, the trans does not seem to want to downshift properly. When accelerating after slowing, it bucks like it is wondering where the gear is. I doubt is has ever been serviced (144,000 mi), but am nervous about a flush and new filter. Any thoughts?

Check fuel pressure.
Has nothing to do with the transmission, but many people mistake "not running right" for a different issue. And "sounds like a whole bank was missing" could mean fuel pressure issues. A fuel pump just starting to go bad often shows signs like this; runs great until you shut it off, then won't start. Or starts & runs fine until you goose it then it bogs and misses.
Just thought I would close the loop on this thread. ALL of the lingering problems were the result of defective COPs. As I mentioned, the PO bought and installed new ones, but they were evidently junk. New COPs fixed everything, including what seemed to be a transmission issue. Nearly 150kmi on it now. Hope it lasts for another 50k. The van is a beast!
