I'm going to buy a new EGR for my pickup, but when I went to pick one up at the parts store, it wouldn't hold a vacuum, and didn't lift the valve off the seat. The parts girl is ordering another one. Am I right in believing that the valve ought to hold a vacuum?
No, it will not. It needs exhaust backpressure to push on a metal diaphragm inside the egr. Once you have exhaust backpressure, it will then hold vacuum and work.
The EGR is not just on and off. The exhaust back pressure modulates the amount the valve is open. More rpms equals more backpressure. This is also why you need the stock manifolds and cat convertor for it to work properly. They create backpressure and it's calibrated for that. If you have modified the exhaust, it' probably not going to work anyway.
