Starting problems--need help!

Hi everyone,

I tried to start my '93 F150 yesterday morning and all I heard was a fast clicking or clacking noise. I took the battery and starter to be tested and they were fine. I couldn't test the starter relay, so I just replaced it. Unfortunately, this has not had any effect on my problem. I have tested to make sure all my connections are tight. What else could be wrong?

Check for the flywheel missing teeth or maybe chipped. Also measure the distance of where the teeth of the starter should hit the flywheel. It may need shims. Also hold a ruler next to the flywheel and gauge if the flywheel is bent in or out. Meaning that the flywheel is leaning toward the engine or away from it. Let me know what you find.

Went through this on a 64 that I had (except that mine was an intermitant problem). After replacing the starter, solinoid, and ignition switch I found that where the neg- cable was grounded to the body (the only place the battery was grounded) wasn't making a good enough connection.

An easy way to test this is when it won't start hook one side of a pair of jumper cables from the neg side of the battry straight to the block (making sure you get good contact) and try it again. If it starts theres your problem.

On the 64 I got a cable from a friend that had clamp/anchor in the middle. I ran the anchor in the middle to the orgional spot on the body (after cleaning the rust from the mount spot w/ some sandpaper) and the end to the block on one of the starter ears. Never had a problem after that.

It turns out that it was heavy rust on the negative terminal of the battery. I scraped off the rust and it started. I may switch to brass terminals to try and solve this problem. The terminals are only eight months old! Anyway, thanks to all who responded.
