help with pinion seal

So I'm ganna be doing my u joints and pinion seal. When we reassemble and put the nut back onto the diff do we have to count the threads and torque it to a certain amount of foot pounds? Any advice or a procedure would do. Also it's a 88 f150 with a open diff and 3.55 gears if that matters

Before taking the nut off remove the drums and see how much it takes to turn the nut in inch pounds.
Then when replacing the the nut torque it to get the same inch pound reading.
This may take a lot of torque to get to the inch pound turning reading.

Oh okay I get what your saying. I didn't think of that. So instead of counting threads just do that?

I use a center punch and I witness mark the nut to the yoke. I then witness the yoke to a spline on the pinon. Then replace the seal and put everything back as it came apart. Using the witness marks to accomplish this. Then put the nut on and wrench it down until those witness marks line up. It is nearly impossible to crush the sleeve any more then original with out a cheater bar on a break over. Unless you are a gorilla. Be sure and put some RTV on the back side of the nut to help seal it.
