1956 f100 ?s

Hi guys, just bought a f100. Had many 60s ford but never a pickup. Looking to change ring and pinion gears from 409 to lower gears. Any leads were by the gears or hole pumpkin already set up. Any leads. Thanks kennyh

There are ring and pinion gear sets available from Summit and other sources for the Dana 44. According to previous posts they are pricey. If you need something less then 3.73 you might need to replace the pumpkin as well as the gears. That't why most folks switch to a 9".

Hi Joe, will a 9inch ford rear be a bolt in to that 56 rear?

You won't find a pumpkin (aka carrier) on an integral Spicer/Dana 44 that has an inspection cover, but you will find one on a 9 inch...that doesn't have an inspection cover.

What you are actually referring to is the 44's differential case that the ring gear bolts to.

4.09 and higher (numerically) ratios use a different case (1M-4205-A) than 3.73 ratio and lower (numerically) ratios (IM-4205-B).

Carrier aka pumpkin shown as 4141 in 9" pic:

Yes a 9" is a direct replacement for the Dana but you may need to have your driveshaft length adjusted. I needed a longer driveshaft on mine.

61.25 1957-1972 Ford F-100 Pickup
61.25 1960-1964 Ford Full Size
61.25 1971-1973 Mustang
61.25 1967-1973 Torino, Ranchero, Fairlane

OBTW you will need one out of a truck to keep your bolt pattern. Several car models will work but they don't have the 5 X 5 1/2 bolt pattern.

There's more to it than the driveshaft, but mostly "little stuff". The axle tubes are larger diameter, the spring pads are a different width, etc. etc. Many, many threads on here, if you search.

Not often mentioned but there is no way to get the stock speedo to read correctly if you drop below ratios that were available from the factory, other than a ratio adapter that mounts in the cable and is $$$$. You can't just change a cheap gear in the trans to correct it.

I got a new speedometer cable drive gear for mine a while back (25 years) but I think I got it from Ford. Here's a site for gears:http://www.ddperformance.com/content...peedoChart.pdf
And here's a site if you want to figure out what number of teeth you need with a certain size tire & rearend ratio. Speedometer Gear Calculator and Charts - TCI® Auto
