There are ring and pinion gear sets available from Summit and other sources for the Dana 44. According to previous posts they are pricey.
If you need something less then 3.73 you might need to replace the pumpkin as well as the gears. That's why most folks switch to a 9."

What you are actually referring to is the 44's differential case that the ring gear bolts to.
4.09 and higher (numerically) ratios use a different case (1M-4205-A) than 3.73 ratio and lower (numerically) ratios (IM-4205-B).

Yes a 9" is a direct replacement for the Dana but you may need to have your driveshaft length adjusted. I needed a longer driveshaft on mine.

OBTW you will need one out of a truck to keep your bolt pattern. Several car models will work but they don't have the 5 X 5 1/2 bolt pattern.

There's more to it than the driveshaft, but mostly "little stuff". The axle tubes are larger diameter, the spring pads are a different width, etc. etc. Many, many threads on here, if you search.
Not often mentioned but there is no way to get the stock speedo to read correctly if you drop below ratios that were available from the factory, other than a ratio adapter that mounts in the cable and is $$$$. You can't just change a cheap gear in the trans to correct it.

And here's a site if you want to figure out what number of teeth you need with a certain size tire & rearend ratio. Speedometer Gear Calculator and Charts - TCI® Auto
