Balance help
1970 to 1981 Ford 351C 400 Cougar Mustang Torino Truck Harmonic Balancer Damper | eBay
Go ahead and grab it if you can spare the bucks. Have you checked all the bolts/nuts, etc for tightness/correct torque after the transplant?
Good luck and I hope it works for you. I know you'll get back to us with the results.
Another thought....the C6 transplant was up to snuff when you installed it, yes?
I have a similar vibration in my 77 F100 2wd. It had a 300 with a manual 4 speed. (T19 I think). I just changed it to a C4 and have been chasing a vibration since.
I installed a new vibration dampener, new trans and motor mounts, balanced the driveshaft, etc, etc.
I installed a new flex plate with no external weights as the 300 is internally balanced.
Could I have installed an incorrect dampener? Could my new torque converter be out of balance?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Rich
Have you the same problem as in a vibration even with the vehicle in PARK with the engine running?
How is the fluid in the C4...full up?
Did you fill the torque converter with ATF before installation....and all the required vacuum lines are hooked up and correct?
...And the torque converter bolts are tight and good?
I can't help you on the balancer part numbers or the difference between the balancer weights, if any. I haven't played with I6 engines much to know.
I'll try and look some stuff up but can't guarantee finding any thing you haven't.
Maybe Mikeo0o0o0 or Mr. Bill (aka) Number Dummy can be of more help.
Maybe you could peek in the I6 forum....or post your query there?
I also changed all the electrical items (plugs, wires, spark control box, distributor, coil) just in case something there was causing a problem. Also changed the EGR valve, just in case. New u-joints as well.
I am almost ready to give up.

From my limited experience with I6s, I've found the stock 1v carb to be problematic....trouble adjusting mixture screws and idle quality and intake vacuum leaks. The distributor seems to be prone to causing troubles, too. Hairline cracks in the cap, loose rotor....
Don't get me wrong, I love the I6 300..a great engine! One of Ford's "better ideas."
And, an engine is an engine.....the same weight differences in rotating assemblies between stick and auto transmissions apply, in my mind.
I'll try and find out something.....interrnally balanced engines still are in need of harmonious turning. I can't guarantee any earth shattering new news for you but I'll give it a whirl.
Maybe someone else with experience with the I6 300 will come along...
Don't give up....think it through and read what you can on it.

A dumb question: You did put the block to bell metal separator plate on, yes? It looks like this:
351M/400 block to auto trans separator plate.
Rbeck204 (Rich),
The same dumb question from me to you also....pardon my asking....just trying to get the facts.....
What I have come up with so far is that the I6 has/had 6 different balancers....How many pulleys on your Har Balancer do you have?
This bit of info has come from an old (haha) post by Number Dummy.
I'm almost thinking there might not be a difference with a zero balanced 300....but that goes against logic. I'll keep looking as I'm sure you will.
Can you see/determine the Ford engineering number on it?
A/T or M/T makes no difference. Non CA balancer marked C8TE-6316-B .. The two inner pulley belts are 3/8" wide and the outer pulley belt is 1/2" wide.
300 C4 uses a different flex plate than the 300 C6.
I know I read somewhere about the different flexplates for the C6 and C4 but it didn't hit me 'till you mentioned it. I presupposed Rbeck204 knew about it whereas I didn't.
