I know nothing about trucks. NOTHING. And that is why I am here.
My brother bought a 1994 F350 about 1 1/2 months ago. It ran great. No gurgle, no sputtering, started fantastic every time! There seemed to be nothing wrong with it.
Then it happened. Everything happened. The ty rods went so he took it in to get those fixed. However, they couldn't start the truck. It was dead.
We moved it to a place that works on diesel engines and came highly recommended. They said it was the fuel pump. So we said change it. It still wouldn't start. So they figured it was the regulator and that was changed as well. Still won't start.
Now they say it's some sort of high pressure oil pump thing.
I don't know if this truck is worth it! Can this many things break down this quickly? Are we being suckered? I just don't know what to do.
My brother is in the hospital right now with heart problems and I'm trying to take care of this without putting any stress on him but I'm going crazy. Please please! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The avenues that you said they have tried are all in line with the symptoms you describe. BUT it does sound like they are on a fishing expedition. They could all have been tested rather then being replaced first. Can you give us some more symptoms; When cranking the truck over does any smoke come out of the exhaust, and if so what color? What is the oil level on the dipstick? Does it have diesel fuel?
Well, that's the strange part. Before that one day that it was taken in for a ty rod, it worked perfectly. The oil didn't leak, or burn, the mileage was great (I don't remember what he said he was getting but it was good). It always started great! There was never any trouble.
Now suddenly it doesn't start. And there are all these problems. They still can't get it started and the $$$ is adding up. I'm ready to tell them to take their parts out and I'll just take my truck, I don't know!?
no start 101....check battery voltage. they will give a no start just like that...but if you know they are fresh, well,it's a different prob.but old batteries can really screw with you. lotsa luck.
They have checked the battery and that gives off lots of power. It tries to turn over but just never kicks enough to get going. But it has 0 oil pressure when they are trying to start it.
It is diesel with two tanks. The first start in the morning used to give off a single puff of black smoke. After it had warmed up it was fine. Now they can't seem to get it going except when it is cold in the morning. I don't get it
I'd be looking at the CPS if it was my truck. The Cam Position Sensor can fail suddenly and the truck will not start. If that was the problem I'd talk with the mechanic about them paying for some of the junk they've been bolting onto the truck and intend to charge you for.
Again, another dumb thought. Will the CPS keep the engine from starting? Not real familiar with this on a diesel but on a gas engine it is more for fuel timing than fuel delivery. It's just something to tell the computer which cyl is up so it can fire the right injector. When they go bad on a gas motor it will still run. It will just run a little rougher and mileage will suffer. Never saw one not make it run.

In 1994 you could get three diesel configurations. You do not say which you have -
1) 7.3 idi normally aspirated (non-electronic without turbocharger)
2) 7.3 IDI turbocharged (non-electronic with turbocharger)
3) 7.3 DI which is the powerstroke (electronic injector controls, turbocharged).
The powerstroke was available in 1994 only with the manual transmission. Both the Powerstroke and the IDI Turbo was badged TurboDiesel.
If you have a powerstroke (and I assume you do since this is posted in the Powerstroke forum) and the problem is no start when it is warmed up but will start when cooled down I would look at injector pressure regulator O rings. This kind of problem is usually caused by a torn or leaking "O"ring in the IPR. Parts are less than $20 from Navistar/International, probably a bit more from Ford.
eMail me at dpharis@eos.net if you want further information and links to my posts when mine failed. I will check eMail a couple times tomorrow (Saturday) in case you reply.
