I am looking at 7.3s. I don't need a diesel, but I want one and I know that is the diesel to get. So this may be the first point you all hammer me on. Don't be afraid I have been on the fence. An F150 would probably be just fine.
Anyhow can you help me jump on this truck or not? This would be my first diesel. I have the checklist of things to look for when buying from this forum. I think I have done a fair amount of research. My budget is between $10-15k. So this is right in the wheel house. I have linked below the ad, some pics I requested and some of their answers to questions I had.
Some of their response with CarFAX:
1. We do not have any service records other than what is listed on the Carfax and if there are any physically in the truck itself. I am not onsite today, so I will have to check the truck tomorrow.
2. Here is the link for the Carfax: Click here to view the CARFAX Vehicle History Report: https://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistor...&partner=SHR_3
3.Spare tire mount is broken, thus why the spare tire is in the bed. My manager said that would be something that we can try to get the part and fix though. So shouldn't be a big worry.
4. The outside of the Air Filter does have a K&N sticker, however I have not had a chance to open it up to confirm actual air filter brand.
5. Does not appear to have any aftermarket tuning, or otherwise.
So, still working on checking the glove compartment for additional service records, checking the air filter, and taking another pic of the driver's side door for you ( I spaced it when I was going around earlier)
Also, It has the K&N Air Filter. Some guys say this is a deal breaker. Is this so? The last 3 trucks I have looked at have this filter. If I look at the Turbo and it isn't dusted. Am I ok??
I am hoping this dealer will let me take it to a Ford dealership to get a thorough look over by someone who know what they are looking at. Think this is smart? Think they will let me do it?? lol Anything I should ask the dealership to do on an advanced checkup?
It appears that it has a red badge on the sides under the f250 badge. It looks like a 'Banks' badge but i can't zoom in to tell. It may have the kit of some kind on it from Banks.
As Diamnd1 stated, get a stock type filter. The K&Ns have a bit of a reputation for dusting engines/turbos. When looking at it in person, be sure to give everything a good look over. U-joints, turbo, etc. Tenn01PSD350s put together a good list here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...questions.html
Feel free to come visit us in the 7.3 section. Also, pictures are mandatory if you get it. We are kind of suckers for eye candy.
I called a Ford dealership close to the seller and they are willing to give it their thorough once over for $265 seems alright by me. It does complicate the transaction some but that's fine.
... snipped ... I called a Ford dealership close to the seller and they are willing to give it their thorough once over for $265 seems alright by me. It does complicate the transaction some but that's fine. Any other thoughts?!
If you end up taking it in to the dealer, make sure you know what specifically they are going to check for you. Also, you should have your own list of things you want them to specifically check out for you.
You don't list where you are from in your signature or profile. Perhaps there is a FTE brother near you that is knowledgeable about 7.3's and would make the time to go over and have a look with you.
Double posts are typically frowned upon... too much confusion.
I might try the 7.3. forum first. Maybe a subject line like "Need a Knowledgeable 7.3 Brother in Madison WI area" or something like that. If that doesn't work after a few days, then I would try in the WI forum
So I went down to see the truck today. Wow is it clean. ****ty part - Phone died in the middle of my inspection, but I'll cut to the chase. Like I said, no rust on the truck it was very clean, except there seemed to be quite a bit of oil around the oil pan and as well as possibly dripping down from the rear passenger side of the engine. Here were the pics i got
driver's side/ rear of the oil pan
driver side/back side of the oil pan, (for orientation sake - see oil filter in the center/bottom of the pic)
