TRUCK: '97 converted to e-fuel (SD Bosch).
MAINTENANCE: Replaced fuel filter & motor oil before summer travels.
TRIP: Traveled 5,000 hard miles pulling a 5th wheel RV.
1st SYMPTOMS: after 5k mi truck began to sputter while on d2 like it was starving for fuel. Began to get the occasional check engine light. Truck died while taking off from a stop sign.
MAINTENANCE: replaced fuel filter; truck started up after a few cranks & was able to drive it home. Replaced motor oil.
PROBLEM: Tried to start truck again... will now no longer start. The pump does appear to be supplying fuel at key on.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the flow chart! That's awesome.
Fuel pressure: don't know, don't have a gauge. *EDIT* fuel does flow after pump & filter. Didn't test PSI, just separated hose from fitting.
Oil level: looks to be a bit (1qt) over full (oops).
Scanner came in the mail today, this OBDII scan tool with Torque Android app says that scanner won't work with my truck. What do I need to read codes on a 1997 OBS?
Thanks.
I use an older version of that BAFX OBDII adapter and Torque PRO to read live data from my 95 OBS. I have not been able to get Torque Pro to read codes on my truck.
So I use Car Gauge Pro to read codes, run injector buzz tests, and cylinder contribution tests. This is a very clunky app, but it does the special tests.
I also recently bought FORScan Lite for Android and it will read codes on my 95 PSD with the BAFX adapter.
My BAFX adapter requires the phone to enter the PIN of 1234 to connect the phone to the adapter via bluetooth.
Saying that the truck died when taking off from a stop makes me think the tin nut on the IPR solenoid may have come off. Take a quick look at that.
Thank you, I just checked the tin nut & it's on tight. But after reading some posts & watching some YouTube videos it's possible that the IPR o-rings or the entire IPR may need to be replaced.
Next thing I would check would be for water in the IDM. Another thing that could cause it to shut down when taking off from a stop. Just unbolt the IDM from the fender and take it out and give it a shake. See if you can hear water sloshing in it.
I don't think 1 qt over would cause your problems. I glad it started but that didn't fix it. If it starts cold but not when it is hot that is a typical IPR o ring issue. Getting the app to work will help narrow down your issue.
Thanks for the pointer; I replaced the IPR o-rings.
But the issue returned and there seems to be a new diagnosis: the PCM is not sending enough volts to properly operate the IPR.
Thoughts?
loose grounds can do that, go ohm them all out and should be less than .1 ohms on all connections
Also the IPR wires can get chaffed and do weird things
Interesting post. The last mechanic's temporary solution (he said I needed a new PCM as a final solution) to the no start & dying while driving issue was to tap into one of the wires going into the IPR and connect it to a ground. The truck runs poorly like this though & the "Check Engine" light comes on. When the truck won't start for me or dies while I'm driving, I do this procedure -tap the IPR wire to a ground- & the truck starts right up but idles & runs poorly. After a few minutes I can usually remove this wire, clear the "Check Engine" light & the truck runs fine again.
Does this sound like a loose ground issue?
How do I go about "ohming out all the connections"?
Thanks for the posts, this is very helpful.
