Hi
I have a 96 Aerostar extended with the 4L engine.
Intermittently when you turn the key to start the van nothing happens. The battery is fine, no clicking from the solenoid just silence. Turning the key one to three more times will alway get a quick easy start. This has been going on for 2 years but is now getting more frequent. Unfortunately it never lasts long enough to do any trouble shooting. It appears as if the ignition switch may be defective in the start position.
Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas?
I have an '87 motorhome with a Ford 460 engine. I have the same problem but not intermittent -- it will not turn over with key in start position. I can get it to turn over and start by jumping power to the start relay. So I'll be following this thread with interest.
Have been searching the internet a lot, and have concluded the likely problem is a corroded wire or connection or the ignition switch. I think I have also learned the actual switch (not the key tumbler) is at the base of the control column. Now I'm trying to find out how to find and get at that switch!
We discovered this problem in our Aerostar after a transmission rebuild. Apparently the neutral safety switch was out of adjustment. Once in every 10 starts it just wouldn't do anything. We found that by putting it into Neutral it would crank up just fine. Sometimes pulling the shifting out of Park and then back into Park does the trick. If you get similar results, it's a good bet you neutral switch is having problems.
One of these days I might get around to seeing if I can adjust the switch or just replace it. I'm very good at putting off any work that
involves crawling underneath the van.
On my motorhome above, I got some advice from a local mechanic that the neutral switch could well be the culprit. And I really didn't want to remove the steering wheel to get at the ignition switch.
So I tried moving the shift lever from Park to Neutral. I had tried this before, but this time I tried jockey-ing the shift lever around the neutral position with the key in the start position. I found a position where contact was made and she started right up.
So mine was a neutral switch problem as well. Think I will take it to the local mechanic and have him do the work putting in a new one. Thanks for the replies everyone!
