I finally bought the Ford SD 250 but not until an exhausting amount of research. Now perhaps someone can comment on this without starting a Chebby v Ford thing all over. I fould the 1500HD w/6.0L motor had much better load and hauling ratings than the comparable F250 w/5.4l motor. Chebby will pull 8000 (which is essentially a 3/4 ton type truck) but the Ford 250 is only rated at 6300lbs. What gives? Is it simply that Chebby has a bigger motor and a tranny geared accordingly to handle bigger loads???? I just don't get it. I like the F250, got a good price but am a bit dissappointed with the rated capacities compared to a smaller??? 1/2 Chebby. When it comes down to it, are ratings determined by motor, tranny, and frame construction and Chebby has simply jumped ahead of the game only to be later jumped over by Ford??? Then again i guess the number on the truck may not really matter much when considering stats and all.
Great article about the diesels, so would the same apply to the gassers where Ford is simply, for 2003 at least, playing catch up and perhaps in 04 or 05 will jump ahead ect. I did notice the article one time compares the F350 to the 2500HD, at least indicating it takes a 1 ton ford to compare to a 3/5 chebby.
Anyway, i do like what i got, just thinking out load.

Wondering the same thing. I have the '03 Superduty towing guide here and according to it an '03 F250 Supercab 4x4 with a 5.4L, auto tranny and 4.10s is rated to tow 8600lbs. With a 2wd it's 9000lbs.
You guys with the 4.10 rear end are right but look at the column above for the 3.73 it says 6900 (i miss quoted by 600lbs). Trans and rear end make a huge diff in pulling power. I rechecked and with 2wd with 4.10 its 8800lbs. Thats mean the 1/2 ton chebby is right there at 8300lbs for their 2wd HD.
See my dad has a 28' 5th wheel that is 7300lbs, so i don't think i should be borrowing it unless the listed ratings are very conservative knowing that someone will surely test the limits....
