Will the T5 from a 03 mustang be the one that can work for the 54 for with the bellhousing kit? My son has one and it has a issue but I just found one for $70. I plan on buying it to fix for his car at least then maybe use for my truck if it is the one to go with. Any input would be great.
Is it going behind the 292 or are you going to change engines? I would venture to guess that the "Y-Blocks Rule!" in your signature says that you will be keeping the 292. If that is the case check on adapters first and then get the trans that the adapter will mate to your engine. I am a Darksider so I can't tell you without doing the leg work for you. Hopefully someone will come along who has done your conversion and they can chime in, otherwise start doing the research on adapters, no sense buying a trans and then finding out no one makes the adapter you need.
Dave, yeah it's Ol' Paint is powered by a 292 and I'm planning on keeping it that way. I have another that had a poor rebuild and it was discovered before it ran so I can tear it down and fix it, needs a sleeve in 1 cyl as ot was overhoned. there is a lip on it. I also have a guy getting me a bare block I plan on making a stroker out of but I need more gears than a truck 4 speed has. 85e150 thanks for the link I will explore that. maybe it will tell me what all I need.
The 2003 Mustang didn't have a T5. Well, the V6 might have, but it has an odd yoke on the back and an electronic speedo - fairly undesirable from an adapting perspective.
The one most of the Y-block adapters are using is the '83-93 Mustang GT one. Not all of those are the same. The '83-84 were NWC. The '85-86 had less desirable ratios. The '87-93 all had the same ratios, but the '89-93 used a better alloy in the gears making them a little stronger.
So, I'd be looking for an '89-93 Mustang GT T5 if I were putting one behind a Y-Block.
The '94-95 Mustang GT T5 is exactly the same with the notable exception of an input shaft that is 0.7" longer than the earlier one. You can swap a '89-93 input shaft into a '94-95 T5 with no issues. The .7" may or may not be a big issue with the Y-Bock swap - I have never done one, but am looking at it for a '57 T-Bird project.
The 4-cyl T5 is not readily adaptable. The '94-96 V6 T5 is usable, but you have the same input shaft issue as the V8 T5 of the same years.
