Almost over night (five days ago or so) my clutch pedal started acting goofy. The first half of the pedal's travel has no resistance at all and does not actuate the clutch. The last inch or so (maybe two inches) depresses it. This sympton happened almost over night. I've let it slide the last few days because it isn't getting any worse, but I suspect with 95,000 miles on my 1996 five-speed, it is time for a disc replacement.
Does this sound correct or could it be something else? I checked the reservoir, and it was a little low, but not empty. I filled it to the line, but no change.
Check on the posssibility of a leaking slave cylinder (you can check on a Mazda tranny by pulling off the rubber inspection plug. Of course, if that's the problem, you might as well do the clutch job too, as you're gonna have the trans out anyway.
It definitely sounds like a leak in the hydraulic system (very common!). Check the master cylinder for the level of hydraulic fluid (dot 3 break fluid, to fill it up). The master cylinder has a tendency to leak at the firewall, because Ford engineers have constructed it too weakly, so that it will bend every time you engage the clutch. It is a well known problem. If you check into the inpection hole in your bell housing, you'll see if it is the slave cylinder that is leaking
