Well -- I cancelled, and later, when I was doing something else, it showed up with updates -- go figure. I have another W7 that had gotten them the day before, so I didn't know why they weren't on this one earlier.
They are changing updates for everything but W10(W10already does it this way). No more individual choices -- you get an update package -- take it or leave it. Folks are saying to put off updates for a month -- just in case MS, you know, screws up and redoes the update.
i have never ever done any updates. automatic updates is the very first thing i turn off on all my computers.
maybe that is why i have 15 year old computers that still work perfectly.

I won't argue with your statement. I will say that as I tried to run XP as it neared the end, there were numerous sites that didn't work for me. Sometimes they'd say that 'you must update your browser'. For sure IE would not update for XP, and I think others also refused (Firefox and/or Chrome -- can't remember).
i have the new laptop running win 8.1 i use pretty much all the time now because of that. but the desktop i use for banking and bill paying, and the computers out in the garage and shop that are used for diagnostic repair and all win XP machines.
i had this issue recently.if you have a win 7 pc and she's stuck on updates.
reboot your pc.
start the services list (search programs and files.search for and select: services)
stop the b.i.t.s service and the windows update service.
google search for and download:
if you don't know if you need the x86 or x64 version, then find out first by going back to search programs on your pc and enter:
system
(or pull it up the long way - control panel/system and security/system)
while in system, look for "system type"
32 bit operating system,means your x86 based.
64 bit operating system,means your x64 based.
download and install the update.
reboot pc.
go to windows update.
do a little dance.
make a little love.
get down tonight.
