My super cool 1977 4x4 van's 460 runs great. It runs so great, in fact, that
it doesn't want to shut off. Everything was working fine. I have not made
any modifications to the vehicle. I pulled in to Chipotle's (a restaurant) parking lot, turned off the ignition and removed the key and started to walk inside to get a burrito and noticed it was still running. ???? I got back in the van and put the key back in the ignition and turned it back "on". The radio and everything else came back on. Turned it back "off" and the radio shut off
again but the van keeps running. The only way to turn it off is to get out and pull the coil wire. I have checked the ignition switch with a multi-meter and it is doing everything it is supposed to do. What else could cause a problem like this?
Whatever it is, it is also running down the battery. If I don't pull the ground off the battery, it will be dead within a few hours.
I had the exact same problem while on my lunch break. truck wouldnt shut off. I have a 1977 ford f-250 supercab with the 460 in it. I ended up having to pull the coil wire also, till i found out that the problem was in the wireing that goes from the ignition to the distributer. I just wiggled the plug ends around that connect the two together and my problem has been solved every since. Still dont really know what the long term cure would be, but ive deffinatly limited the problem down to this being these wires. I hope this helps anyone else out there who have this problem as it can be very nerve racking not to mention embaracing. jason
