Manual or Auto Hubs

My 88 Bronco has auto hubs on it. I have seen several topics on here about converting the autos to manuals. I have a few questions about this. If I do take off the autos and install manuals, if I hit the 4x4 button in the cab and the manual hubs are unlocked I will still be in 2 wheel drive since the hubs are not locked.(front shafts will turn but not provide any power to the wheels) Now can I also shift into 4x4 low but leave the hubs unlocked and have that extra power that low range has to offer without being in 4x4??? with out damaging anything??? Also what brands of manual hubs do you prefer?? I do occasionally go offroading so I need something rather good but this is a daily driver with little money to invest into it.
Thanks for the help,

Yes you'll be able to, i do it quite a bit in my bronco when the extra pull of 4L is needed to help, If full 4wd is not needed. As for Hubs brand I don't think you can beat Warn Hubs. But you've got milemarker and superwend hubs are good also. Either of the 3 brands you choose ya won't go wrong since they all are covered for life.

Yeah I use 2L for backing up trailers. Just lock the hubs before you get in the truck if you know you're going to be hitting some sloppyness. Don't wait till ur in the mud to lock them haha. Their only like 60 bucks I think, get Warn Premiums.

Manuals. 2 wheel low is awesome. Helps my manueveur in tight places.(like parking lots) Can't beat all the pulling power you get from it either. I paid 86 buck for my warn standards. The only difference between the premiums and standards is the **** that u have to turn is metal instead of plastic, it takes a 9/10's turn to engage the premiums as opposed to the 1/4 turn for the standards. I would go with the standards, better price and just as reliable.

I think I have decided to go with Warn Standard hubs. After reading an artical they seem to be better than the Mile Makers.
Here is the artical that I read, what's your opinions of it?? The Mile Markers have a better built body but the Warns are double sealed at the **** and also have O-Rings at the cap screws(Mile Marker is single sealed and no O-Rings)
Also anyone use Superwinch hubs?? is so, how have they proformed for you?
Thanks,
Kevin

EDIT.
Another question, will I need a Converstion Kit if I install manual hubs?? The only Broncos it has listed that needs a converstion kit is THREE HOLE CAP SCREWS. I see this listed for all three brands.

on yor year Bronco it's highly doubtful you'll need a Conv. Kit. They was mainly found in the 92 or 93 up 150/bronco's. Easy way to find out if you need the kit is by looking at the Auto hubs on your bronco. If you see 7 bolts/allen screws "whichever ya want to call em" around the outer hub you won't need the kit, Just slap hubs in and go. If you don't have the 7 Allen screws you'll need the kit.

I put warn in all my 4x4's I just stated other brands That makes them because in some area part stores ya can't find warns. Like my erea I gotta got thru 4wheel parts. I had a truck with Superwench Hubs in it, But how well they Worked I'm not sure I never got a chance to mess with them before i sold the truck. I meant to Take a set of well wore Factory hubs I carry for backup and slap them in place of the supers for back up

wolfman; do you have a hub cover on your 88?
Some had the "flange" style hubs which were actually located behind the wheel. No aftermarket hub kits are sold for this type.
If you have the "standard" auto hubs (3,5, or 7 screw cover) then it's ok; go with whatever you desire.
(Some hub swap tech articles are in my site under "Technical" - "Hubs")
