Hi everybody, I have a question about a total exhaust system upgrade for a 91 F-150 with the 302 motor. A friend of mine told me that the upgrade which includes headers, high flow cats, 2 1/2 or 3 inch piping, and flowmasters will not give me much of an upgrade and is not worth the 650 to 700 dollars. I was wondering if the upgrade is worth the money and is the best way to go.
I'm not an expert by any means, but too me, that doesn't sound like a bad deal. Headers by themselves can cost around $400-$600. Plus you are getting high flow cats, and flowmasters. I say go for it, but you might want to get some extra advice, from guys who know more than me, just my opinion. RedDeviL
Does $700 include installation? The price seems a little steep.
I’ve seen headers for $100, and ones for $400.
What is the name brand of the headers, and are they ceramic coated, or just painted?
I’d say for a professional installation and the items you described, it should be no more than $600.
Are you looking to gain performance or some great sound?
Do you have emissions testing in your area?
I am looking for goo sound but performance is more important. the headers are just painted not ceramic coated. i m wondering if i will get some decent h.p. and torque out of the mod. the headers cost around 130.00 nd they are made by dynomax, same with tyhe hooker headers.
You will get good sound, and maybe 10-15 HP.
This may sound less than what you were thinking, but the speed density doesn’t allow much room for upgrade.
I put a system in my truck, here’s what I did; gutted out the first cat, kept the Y pipe, and manifolds, put a hi-flow cat in place of the stock one, outlet of the cat is 3", which goes into a vortex muffler, and splits into duals.
I did not feel a performance increase, and gas mileage stayed the same.
What you could do is just get a dual exhaust right after the cat, and eliminate the muffler.
This will get the sound you want and will increase the HP too.
I was quoted about $175 for that setup at an independent muffler shop.
And you could always have some headers installed or have them installed.
If you want to spend $700 for no more than 20 HP, and some noise go for it, but sounds like a waste to me.
It will be a little cheaper going with a single 3" exhaust. I would recommend a set of mustang shortyhedders. There are many that are made for the mustang and the price will be a little cheaper. If you are going to get this done at an exhaust shop the mustang ones will work great. I have hedman shorty mustang hedders on my rig and not only were they pretty cheap but they are holding up great (3 yrs so far).
For a Cheap good sounding, good performance setup I would recommend a set of shorty hedders, 2 hi flow cats, 1 flowmaster 3". And the shorter the tail pipe after the muffler will get the loudest system. More tailpipe will be a bit quieter but give a deeper sound.
I have single 3" exhaust running until the muffler and then I have a flowmaster with 2 2.5 in outlets. So it is acutally "Fake" dual exhaust. It sounds great and was pretty cheap to do (it was about 225.00 total including hedders, installation, muffler, pipe. I ripped the cats out!)
thanks for the info brett_d, why did you go for 2 cats and not one. I did here that the shorty headers give you a little better bottom end but alot of time they hit the motor mounts, but if they don't I would definately like to go with the shorty headers, what size of headers did you go with, 2 1/2 or 2 5/8.
