Flange output alternative to the BW1356
I have a ZF5 from behind a 7.3 IDI. I would like to switch from my current transfer case to one with a flange output to the rear shaft. I want it to bolt up to my ZF and hold up to the torque produced by a stock 12-valve 6BT (400 ft lb).
What trucks should I be looking for at the junk yard? I kind-of remember something about Broncos.

A NVG271 from behind a 4R100 will bolt up and has flanges on both ends. There were many more of them made than the 4407 and finding a manual version isn't too hard since a low trim work truck usually got the 4R100 and a manual case. The biggest problem with them is that lots of them were behind diesels so the guys selling them tend to be the mouth breathers who list a headlight for $500 because it's a "diesel headlight" and "manual cases don't break. The 271 was also the best case Dodge offered at the time so the "Cummings" fanboys jack up the price by association. If you're patient then you can find a 271. I think it's the better choice just because you know that there's many more out there in case (see what I did there) you need to find parts a few years from now. The 271 is also a little bigger (bigger sprockets and therefore chain case) than the 4407 but the 4407 has a much wider chain so you may need to hammer the floor to make it fit. IIRC they're the same length so the drive shafts will be the same.
Either is a huge step up from a 1345 or 1356, just put them side by side and you'll see what I mean.
The 1345 didn't have flanges, it had fixed yokes. Some people say it uses the same splines as the 1356 and yokes interchange, but the one I took apart didn't. Considering the number of 1356s I've seen for sale as 1345s and vise-versa I'm skeptical that yokes/flanges can interchange. If you're gonna use the stock yokes then the 1345 is the way to go because the pump is bolted to the planetary case and if it spins you have bigger problems.

The first and last 4R100s (E4OD) to roll of the line were 31spline output. If the case bolted to that it will bolt into your truck. There's several other output splines in SD trucks that use the same 6-bolt pattern so you must get one from an 4R100 to be sure. IIRC some of the earlier 5spd autos used the 31spl but you'll need to count teeth before you buy.

Some (maybe all, I haven't looked at many) of the newer 1/2-ton cases are the same 31spl. I'm sure there's more that could be added to the list.
