Heys guys.....
It's been a while since I have been up here but I have a question about changing the oil that has been bugging me. When you change the oil in your excursion....do you go by the manual or the dipstick? I have a 2000 excursion with the 6.8 v-10 and the manual states the oil capacity with filter is 6 quarts. If I put 6 quarts in....it brings the oil level to just barely over the minimum mark on the dipstick. If I put 6.5 quarts in....it brings it up to about 2/3 of the way through the crosshatched area. So.....do yall trust the manual or go by whats on the dipstick?
I trust the manual and the dimensions of the insides of my engine block more than a floppy removable dipstick. 6 quarts like the manual states. It puts mine right at full anyway.
Thanks for the replies guys. It's definitely interesting that some folks are getting full on the dipstick with 6qts and some are getting full with 7qts (assuming everyone is using a standard size filter vs oversize).

I have never gone by the manual. Right or wrong, all I've ever done, ever since I could reach the dipstick when I was a wee lad and my dad taught me how to check the oil, was go by the level shown on the dipstick.

All engines are designed for a certain amount of oil. If you run more than stated, you run the risk of foaming the oil. Best way is to calibrate the dipstick to the recommended factory fill. If there is a gross difference, something has changed, wrong dipstick, dipstick tube out of position etc... Fill the crankcase to the recommended level but minus 1 qt, run the engine for a few minutes then let it sit and check. Mark the stick if necessary with the new 1 qt. low mark. Add your final qt and repeat.

They had cars back when you were a wee lad? I thought penny farthing bikes and horse drawn carriages were the only modes of transportation until you were in your mid 30's... huh.
