Are these new side Windows more like laminated glass rather than tempered? I recently saw a newer explorer with a spider webbed driver side window and it had me puzzled until I read this thread. Been wondering a lot about it it because I'm a firefighter and were used to breaking temper ed glass easily.

IIRC, all automotive glass must be "safety glass" (i.e., laminated) since like 1990.
Almost all glass in 1st world countries is tempered (i.e., heat treated); safety glass is effectively laminated tempered glass.
The important part of safety glass (AKA laminated) is that when it breaks, the pieces are smaller and more round. Depending on the lamination properties, it may be possible to delay the breaking point tremendously (see also, "ballistic glass")
Feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken.

I would find it nice to have stronger glass in the side windows as it would deter thefts dramatically as the tempered glass is easy to shatter with a sharp rap from a hard object. I would also find it somewhat confining as the ability to use the windows as an escape route would be eliminated if the glass could not be broken apart like the tempered glass.
