Hi guys. I'm new to this forum and of course, need help. I have a 89 Bronco w/ auto tranny and on the fly 4wd. Today I tested out the 4wd to make sure it is still operating. The truck went into 4wd and 4wl with no problem. But it seems that the transfer case is stuck in 4wl and will not come out. The dash board lights indicate that it is functioning ok. I pulled the stepper motor off of the transfer case and it jives with the dash. Now on the transfer case, it is marked for all of its drive settings. I can turn the rod with absolutly no resistance between all of its setting with no problem. So basically it looks like this adjustment rod has failed. And turning the rod makes no difference in operation either. So does anyone know of any trouble shooting or online parts breakdown of this transfer case? Any sugestions and help is appreciated.

Some times they just dont scan real well from the book ..i have the same prob ..I pick up all kinds of books on trucks and cars . i get them from garage sales and truck swap meets .just never know when you or some one will need them ..LOL just look good in my shop ..lol
Thanks guys, your awesome. I couldn't make out much from the pic so if you could send a better pic to twistedmx5(No Email Addresses In Posts!) it would be greatly apperciated. I talked to a customer of mine today with the same truck with same drivetrain aguess what, he had the same problem. He had someone else fix it so he wasn't 100% sure of the problem but did tell me that the same thing happened to him and the tranny guy took apart the tc and found that there is a fork and a ratcheting mech. in there and something on the fork side broke. He pulled the stepper motor off orginally and found the rod had no ratcheting to it.
So here's my other question. I could pull apart the tc and attempt to fix the hopefully broken fork or I can go to the wreckers and pick up a tc for around $250. I wouldn't even know where to get the internal parts for the tc. What do you guys think is the better call here? Thanks again.
if you cant get the parts you need from ford, check with some of the biger transmision shops, if your not shure bout tearing into it your self you can always pull the TC your self and take it to the shop have them redo it then bring it home put back in your self to save you some money. Good Luck! DW
I thought about pulling it myself and having a tranny guy fix it but when I got a quote for $950 to 1050, I almost hit the floor. I'm going to pull it and take it apart to see what broke. If the parts are more expensive than a junkyard unit, I'll just buy that instead.
you can order a reman unit from Bronco Graveyard for that price with a warrenty. That diagram i tried to post on here for you came out of my haynes manual, you can pick one up at most parts stores for about $12. Good luck. DW
