Im in desperate need of help! My parking brake cable (the front one) snapped a while ago, so I ordered the part from Ford (NO ONE carries it) and went about installing it tonight. I took off the pedal mechanism and threaded the cable through and hooked it up how i think its supposed to go. (Goes up and around and the little hammer head metal peice goes into the hole on one of the gears. Fits nice and snug and I could see where the old wire was due to the grease marks.)
Now I go to hook it back up and the cable is 2 inches short. I cant hook back into the other 2 wires! I have work tommorow morning and am looking for a fix. Someone posted about this a while ago, his was 2 inches short too but no one ever responded. ANY HELP is greatly appreciated. I have a feeling Im gonna have to loosen some cables in the back wheels or something. Thanks in advance! Ill be watching attentively at the boards!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Jan-02 AT 09:35 PM (EST)]IIRC, there's a bolt where you hook the wire up to the two wires that go to the left and right brake. If you turn the nut on that bolt, you should get closer to the wire. I kinda doubt it'll be enough, though. No offense, but have you checked that your break pedal is completely extended? If it's still in the position where it snapped, it'll be too short. Another thing could be that the breaks are too loose. Maybe use a lever and pull on the wire for the breaks. You'll notice if that makes the fit too tight
See if there is any slack that can be let out in the fronts adjustments. My suggestion(don't take me for a smart *** either)take a couple blocks of wood with you, if you don't figure it out. I don't remember the set-up your truck uses or I could help think of a new bracket or something... OH YEAH brain fart try pulling on the cable itself some, they stretch maybe you can get it to stretch enough to work. Hope this helps.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Jan-02 AT 10:14 PM (EST)]Thanks for the replies. I can pull on the 2 far back wires, and they give a little, I Could get more but I just dont want the mechanism in the back wheels to become engaged and act as though im drivin around with the parking brake even slightly engaged. My dad says there are a couple bolts in the back I can loosen up or something. Ill find out tommorow when its light outside.
By the way its a 1996 F-150 SWB, the part # I got is F6TZ*2853*DA (thats off the invoice) And the parking brake is all the way up (in the unengaged position) to allow for the most cable to come out.
