!947 Box Truck

I have a 47 box truck Im working on. Not sure if its a 1 or 1 1/2 ton.
The front and rear wheels were different lug pattern but both were two piece wheels with tubes. I have and 8.8 ford rear end for it but need to change the front wheel hubs to match. I haven't had any luck finding them. Anyone have any ideas what will fit.

I am having a hard time visualizing this. The 8.8 might be too light duty for your truck. You can click on the yellow landscape icon in the message box to post a pic of your truck.

If the wheelbase is 122" it's a one ton. These were always single rear wheel trucks. 17" tires. If 20" tire and 131" wheelbase or 157" it's a 1 1/2 or 2 ton. Yes, a picture or two. And welcome to FTE !

I'm hope the 8.8 will work. Just making this a cruiser. I was at a car show yesterday day in Dallas and there was nothing like this. I took a 1927 and was surrounded by the same cars. I've only seen one other truck like it and am kicking my self for not stopping to look at it.

That box truck looks pretty heavy duty for an 8.8. I'd look for a Dana 60 or Dana 70 depending on if it is a 1 ton or 1 1/2 ton based.

Neat truck, thanks for posting pictures. What are your drive train plans for it?

It looks like an REA truck on a 122" tonner chassis. By the looks of the air deflector/hood latch panel, it was originally a six cylinder truck. I would think a Dana 60 would be better than an 8.8". I believe you could use drums off of a '48-'52 F2-F3 on the front and have 8 hole wheels all around. Cool truck!

I think it's an old Railway Express/REA truck and wager it's a 1.5 ton. I'd scrap the 8.8 idea and think in terms of a Dana 70 out of a 1970s/80s era Dodge RM400/500 motor home. Same 5 lug x 8" pattern to match the front, would be a near bolt in swap, would work well with the motor home's Budd 89340 tubeless 19.5" x 6" wheels, and would yield a 4.56/1 final drive ratio. Here's one of the axles on eBay, and next is a pair of the wheels that are mislabeled as 6 lug. Stu

Edit - if it is a tonner I'll ditto Mark's comments. Stu

Stu, I believe that it is a tonner. The front drum looks to be too small to be 14" and the rear axle in front of the truck is definitely a tonner axle.

Didn't see that rear axle sitting in front. You got it right. Stu

X3 on the REA. Yes I also think tonner, but once again, measure wheelbase axle to axle. Also wheel wells or 'wheel houses' inside the body. There should be 48.5 or 49" between if it's a tonner. If it's less, like 45" it would have been built on a 1 1/2 ton cab/chassis frame... It is a very cool truck.

Was it normal to have different wheel patterns on the front and rear? As far as the motor, I have a small block Chevy that came out of a 73 vett with turbo 400. Thanks for the info on the rear axle. I will start working on that.

I'd sure like to know your front bolt pattern, and estimated wheelbase. Eyeballing the front again in your new picture it looks to me to be 5 x 8". To find it you measure outside of one stud (not the nut) to the middle of the one across. Skip the next in the circle. If it's 5 x 8" you have a 1.5 ton, if 5 x 6 7/8" you have a tonner. The 1.5 ton wheelbase measurement is 134", tonner is 122. Stu

The front bolt pattern is 6 7/8. I have the rear axle out but measured 125 on the wheel base.
