ABS Light keeps coming on?

First of all, hello to all the fellow Ford Owners.

1999 F150, V6, auto.

Ok., my Abs light on the dash keeps coming on after i've been driving the truck for about 10 min., then if i shut the truck off, turn it back on, 10 mins. later i comes back on, no flashing, just stays on.

My brakes are all good, fluid is fine, can't seem to tell any difference in the way the brakes act either. Check engine light doesn't come on either. Everything seems to be fine, except the light is telling me that something is wrong.

I've read into some past posts, and it seems like people have been having similar problems, with the variable speed sensor / abs sensor. are they one and the same? do you guys think this could be the problem. If so, where is it located? Just clean it off after i take it out, or replace. Also, is this a dealer only part, or would a place like autozone carry it? any ideas on the cost of the part?

Thats for the help in advance.

Frank.

ABS Light keeps coming on?

Also, the guy at my parts store told me, since i have 4 wheel disc brakes, that i will have to find the corrupt sensor, or replace all 4 of them. Is this true? How can i tell which sensor is bad without having it hooked up to a machine. He also said it was a bad idea to spray the sensor with brake cleaner.

I guess replacing 4 of them, would still be cheaper than having a garage hook it up to a machine.

Help please.

Not sure how different yours is from mine since I just have RABS. The first thing you need to do is get the code. You can do this yourself without taking it to the shop, I don't have the details in front of me now but you can look them up in the forum. Basically you have to find the connector on the passenger side kick panel and short it to ground and the codes will flash on the dash. Then you could tell us which code you have and someone here will tell you what it means. Mine was doing something similiar to yours until the light finally just stayed one and it turned out to be a bad valve.

Read about getting the code and then tell us which code you get. Remember to count all the flashes including the last long one.

ABS Light keeps coming on?

I copied this from another message board:

Put the ignition in 'run' position, and locate the black RABS II diagnostic connector. (behind pass. side kick panel) Detach the two connector halves and attach one end of a jumper wire to the black/orange wire side of the connector. Ground the other end of the jumper wire (I'm told a screw driver works just fine). Now your ABS light should begin to flash. The code should continue to repeat itself until the ignition is switched back to off.

As you probably know, you're supposed to count the number of times your ABS light flashes on the dash, including the last, much longer flash, and use these codes to diagnose your problem. These codes are for all 97-00 RABS F-series trucks except 99-00 Super Duty Models:

# of Flashes Problem
2: Open RABS II Isolation Solenoid Circuit
3: Open RABS II Dump Solenoid Circuit
4: Open/Grounded RABS Valve Reset Circuit
5: Excessive Dump Solenoid Activity
6: Erratic Rear Anti-Lock Brake Sensor Circuit
7: No Isolation Solenoid During Self-Check
8: No Dump Solenoid During Self-Check
9: High Speed Sensor Resistance
10: Low Speed Sensor Resistance
11: Brake Pedal Position (BPP) Switch Closed
12: Loss of Brake Fluid During an Anti-Lock Stop
13: RABS II Module Failure
16: RABS System OK

Also:
Vehicle speed sensor = $18
RABS Valve =$287

If you ground the wrong side of the connector you will blow a fuse.

ABS Light keeps coming on?

I took the truck to Midas today at lunch, had them read the code - I didn't feel comfortable doing that part. They told me the code was a C1230 Rear speed sensor circuit fault.

I bought the part at the local ford dealer for $18 and i'll put it on tonight. Hopefully thats all that will be wrong.

Will i need to disconnect the battery to get the code to clear and the light to turn off? or will it just do it on it's own?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for all the help. I installed it last night, pulled the battery cables for an hour, and as of right now, the light is still off.

Thanks again.
