64 F100 Project
Brakes were gone, so after replacing the master cylinder I bled and flushed out the lines. Me under the truck opening the bleed screws and my girlfriend in her daisy dukes, in the truck pressing and releasing the pedal.... What a great afternoon!!!
I could tell right away this truck had good bones, good glass and someone took real good care of it. It had been parked for a while and looked really dirty. With some serious elbow grease my little truck is looking better already!
Checked the brake pads and they look good, brakes and handles as well as expected with bias tires on all 4 corners.. Many extra bias tires were in the back, including a matched set of studded winter tires on 16' rims.
As far as I know I bought this truck from the grandson of the second owner. A small worn book of meticulous service records starting in the early 80's was found between the seat bottom and backrest. The engine was overhauled and brakes redone at some point. There are several idiosyncratic farmer mods, including twin spare mounts, tow-bar mounts, cab and front corner lights, and a heavy duty bottle jack..
Aftermarket inside door handles..
Custom front skid plate..
Leaf spring mods..
Custom badges..
Changed the oil ad went for a cruise and it wanted to stall at highway speed, not getting enough fuel. So i pulled it into the garage and changed the fuel filter, swapping out the silver inline canister for a clear generic one with a rubber hose approved for fuel..
Tons of dirt and rust came out the inlet side so I pulled out the tank and rinsed out sediment and crap, along with remnants of an aftermarket locking fuel cap..
The sending unit was extremely rusted, so I ordered a new one from dennis carpenter, along with a new fuel cap and the grommet that goes around the fuel line where it goes down through the floor. It was only shown as fitting trucks 1960 and older, however was the only fuel line grommet that I could find. I am assuming it will work or can be made to work. The old one is almost dust and I don't want that rubbing. Figured since its all apart now is a great time to put a new one in.
Also checked in the cab corners since the fuel tank is out of the way and found a dead mouse and one huge mouse nest made from chewed-up seat padding.. I figured this would explain the slight odour present. Checking the passenger side I discovered the actual source of the smell. The cab corner was filled with wheat kernels and chaff (this was a farm truck).. Filled to the brim and rotting away...
Holding my breath I got most of it vacuumed out and cleaned with a bleach solution. Drilled a couple drain holes and flushed it out. Amazingly the corners are in really good condition. There is minor surface rust but the only rust holes are in the fenders and the front of the bed, right behind then cab.. Amazingly straight body on this truck, so Id like to do a couple repairs, clean it up and drive it the way it is.
Any advice on some sort of lubricant to spray into the corners to prevent rust?? I know there are rust-check products available, and I've also been told aft will do the trick..
Also I think a new seat skin would be in order, to make the interior more clean and comfortable.. Any under the $200 price point would do fine, as I am not too worried about factory reproduction, as long as it is blue and fits decently. Has anyone had a positive experience with these or others?
