I was changing an air filter in my 86 6.9 and noticed how small is the hole between the filter box and the manifold. The manifold opening is maybe 2x the diameter of the opening in the box. There is some sort of "velocity stack" in the filter box opening, which seems like a great idea but why at cost of a smaller diameter hole?? Wondering if anybody removed it and what were the results(flow=>power, economy) and if anybody has got a clue why did they (ford I assume) put it in there in first place...
The smaller opening works with the larger bowl that's attached to the lid. The bowl is commonly called the "Fish Bowl" by us diesel nuts. Long-and-short, it was put there by Ford for noise reduction. The bad part is that it is also restricting the flow through the intake.
When removed, you'll notice a deeper and slightly louder sound from the intake, but people have also picked up a little extra power as well. To get rid of it, simply get your trusty sawzall, or plasma cutter, torch, etc. and enlarge the opening on the bottom so it's the same size as the one on the intake manifold. Then you need to do that same thing with the fish bowl. Enlarge the opening on the bottom, or you could just remove the whole thing from the lid. This will help a lot to free up the engine's breathing.
Hope this helps.
