At the risk of starting a Holy war, I have a question that I have been dying to ask and get some honest answers on.
In the "Token Christianity" thread, many people argued that the only path of salvation was to believe in the 'One True God and his Son, Jesus Christ'. Only once was the idea of a jungle pygmy who never heard the Word of God brought up. The answer was interesting but didn't satisfy my curiosity.
Here it is: The familiar Christian history of God, Jesus, etc. has historically only been accepted by a minority of the world's population. For much of the Old Testament, there were less than 100,000 Jews walking around. Yet there were several million people roaming the Earth that did not believe in the same God as they. What happened to them when they died? Did they go to heaven or hell? Even today something like half the population of the world doesn't ascribe to the Jewish/Christian/Islamic God. What will happen to them? Will they go to heaven or hell?
I would like to hear people’s opinions on this topic.
I went to catholic grade school and high school. I vaguely remember something the catholic religion taught that was referred to as "Pergatory". Someone else should probably help out on this but I think this was supposed to be the place where non-baptized but "good" people went for some encertain amount of time until they were brought to heaven. Keep in mind, this is just what I remember, others might be more helpful!
The place where non baptized people go in Limbo. Limbo is a lesser division of Hell. (Read Dante's Inferno for good info). Purgatory is where souls that were less than perfect (everybody I'd say) for a time before they are allowed into Heaven.
Dependent on which century of reference you wish to cite, the other beliefs were accepted, rejected, hated, exterminated, or ignored.
The modern Christian opinions differ from Church to Church, Nation to Nation. There is no longer any definite answer to your question, because so many different denominations see this question differently.
My own opinion, based upon the study of most philosophies, is that if the belief is based upon love, with supportive natures in it's followers, then they are following the One Lord.
If however the belief is based on conquest, and destruction is in the hearts of the followers, then they follow the adversary. A search of the Bible will give sufficient grounds to make this determination.
