So I'm t to get some opinions here. Should I buy the rebuilt 400 for $600. I went and checked it out yesterday and is a 400 and has definitely been rebuilt and never ran. Or should I stay with the 351w HO I have already in the garage and have it rebuilt? The vehicle has a POS 351m in it right now.
I reckon buy the 400 and swap it. Everything will fit. Do you know what sort of pistons and cam went in? If they are low compression then maybe not so good. If they are reasonable compression you could swap the cam if it isn't suitable. easy job with the engine out.
To be honest don't know what cam or pistons but they are new pistons for sure. I can see all the internals from the bottom side because there is no oil pan bolted on. Heads are on it and intake. Id want to put a good cam in it and straight up timing set if it doesn't already have them
Another thing to consider is your transmission. The 351modified/400 bellhousing is different than the Windsor. Not a big deal if you are running a 4 speed, you can swap the bellhousing but if its a C-6 you have to change the transmission.
Fwiw I am a much bigger fan of the Windsor. I know of 5 or 6 guys that bought 400s brand new, (including my dad's 77 F-250) and not one of them made it to 50,000 miles. Two broken cranks, cracked blocks, and cracked heads. I wouldn't worry about any of these problems now, since those bad castings should be long gone. Just left a bad taste in my mouth.
Go with the 400. Much more torque if done correctly. And, there are several other things to change if you go to a Windsor, like tranny, engine stands that are riveted to the frame, and even wiring harness.
