should I buy
I'm seriouly looking at a 1986 F 270 gas engine 460 motor with only 83,000 miles, automatic. I intend to pull a horse trailer with my truck. Research says this will work. What do you think? A mechanic will be checking the truck out for me. P.S. This is my first truck. Tallyho

Yes that combination will make a good horse trailer hauler.
For what you are wanting to do with it, anything less than the 460, cubic inch wise and you would be dissapointed.
Enjoy your first truck. And remember this web-site. I myself don't believe there is a better Ford site out there.

What a great truck! I now have my first "big girl truck" as I call it. F250 XTL with sprayed bed liner, fifth will hitch plus bumper pull hitch, tool box with pop up tie downs. The inside is cleaner than you would believe. I've been driving the truck the last couple of day and really enjoy geting use to it. Can't wait to find a horse trailer. Any thought out there on what to watch out for? The first thing I'm gonna do is get a tune up and change all the fluids to synthaics. (sp?).

Umm, I'm not an expert on this, but I'd go over to the "Oil & Lubrication" forum and ask about putting synthetic stuff into an older engine/truck.
I seem to remember some of them saying that the synthetic stuff doesn't work so well when a motor/equipment has been broken in with traditional lubes.
I could be wrong about this, but it's something I'm sure of that I once read about in that forum.
