We are currently on the road traveling with our 5th wheel. Today on the highway I got the "500 miles to empty" message. No problem, the campground is about 100 miles away one I can refill def tank there instead of the road shoulder. As I was pulling into the campground, the message said I had 230 miles to empty then the message center flashed exhaust filter overload, service system now. The check engine light also came on. I refilled the def tank (took all 50th gallons) and all the warning messages are still there. The owners manual says that message means needs to be serviced by the dealer. I never got any previous warning like drive to clean messages. Also a wrench icon appeared with indicates a driveline fault. I am many miles from any dealer, what can I do??? This is a 2015 F250.
This is a software hiccup, somewhere in the forum there is info about it. I don't remember where, but read through the threads and you'll find some info. I will look too and get back to ya.
Had something similiar happen last summer. Drove appox 50+/- highway miles unhitched. Msgs all went away. Dealers I have talked too since have had no cure except what I did by driving. Torque Pro can give you status info on regen's which can give you more info.
Ok, after filling the def tank, started it this morning and the tank showed full, check engine light went out, and the wrench icon is off. However, my basic display in this truck showed exhaust overload service now. The truck is running normal. I ran it up on the freeway and it changed to cleaning filter. After a 40 mIle round trip, all went back to normal and no warning messages. All thru this ordeal, the truck never went into protect or limp mode. I guess even though the display showed 230 miles to empty the tank was bone dry. I put 5 gallons into a 5 gallon tank, and when I looked into the filler neck with a flashlight I couldn't see the level in there. It really gives you a sinking feeling being 1000 miles from home, and 100 mIles from the closest dealer.
You should never see the def at the top of the fill spout. Best to use the ford filler as it will quit when full. You don't want to over fill it in the winter as it will freeze.
