intermittent fuel issue

About the only other thing I can think of is that the IDM wire might be worth checking. It runs from the module ( the second pin from the outside I think) to the ECM at pin 4. Somewhere in this wire is a 22k ohm resistor. Might want to check resistance on that wire and check the connector on pin 4. Another is that the dist. is the ignition ground source (don't know if that makes any diff). For further testing I think you need things like TFI diagnostic harness and breakout box.
This resistor may be temp sensitive but, I would think warmer weather would have more effect on it.

Ive done wiggled every wire and every connecter I could find I pulled apart and checked for corrosion. Nothing there.
Maybe its time to pull the pump?

is there something that tells the computer that its time to shut the pump off? if so, could that be faulty?

There is a timer inside the computer.Once the computer gets power from turning the key on it starts the timer. It will time out unless it sees a signal that the engine started.
You know this isn't making sense any more.....if the computer isn't getting the signal, then it shouldn't be trying to run the pump.(another hint of a bad computer)

I'm starting to lean with stepman. I think you have a faulty ECM. You should be able to pick one up from the junkyard for around $20-50 I think. You'll need the year, engine size, auto or manual trans. I think that is all you need, but I am sure that someone else knows for sure.

See, the open that the code refers to, can be anywhere, including in the ECM.

I checked the distributer harness over, and replaced the module on the distributor itself as I heard they have a tendency to give out from heat.

I also located a handful of computers for 50 to 150, but I need to get the number off of the one in the truck.

This is the one under the passenger kick panel that we are talking about isnt it? Just want to be sure before I get one.

That is where it should be located. Good luck and sorry we don't have a definite answer for you.

According to the numbers on the computer looks like a 100 bill

After I get it in all let you know what happens.

I do appreaciate all the help, I know its a strange issue to debug.

Quick update.........

Put the second hand computer in this afternoon, it is an updated version of the one that Ford used to use, the one that was in the truck originally was discontinued. (at least according to the local dealer)

I still dont know about the fuel pump running as it was warm today and was starting fine, I will try in the morning when it is cold and that should tell me whether it fixed it or not. Ill let you know one way or the other as I will either be happy or crying.......

On another note, the new computer has done the following:

1: The miss that was in the engine at idle is gone.
2: It shifts at different RPMs now.
3: It has much more "get up and go".
4: It no longer slams into reverse.
5: It shifts much smoother through the gears at normal driving.
6: It no longer pings going up a hill.

So even if it doesnt end up correcting the fuel pump issue it was a worthwhile swap.

A smile is on my face.......its cold this morning, and it is working as it should...............I wont feel totally sure until I have a few more days of it working correctly, however at this point it seems to have corrected the trouble. Thanks to everyone, I cant imagine what that might have cost me to have some shop try to fix.
