1998 ranger Cam synchronizer

1998 ranger Cam synchronizer
Hello,
I'm putting a new crankshaft in my girlfriends 1998 ranger 3.0 v6 4x4.
The reason for this is that the gear on the camshaft synchro shaft (Oil pump drive unit) was destroyed by the camshaft gear.
I bought a new synchro, and bearings, and had the crank fixxed,.
When I went to install the new synchro, I found out that i needed A "Special" Tool. so I bought that too.
This tool is supposed to properly align the tab on the synchro with the cam position sensor. But there aren't any very good instructions on doing this.
So my question is Where is the tab on the synchro supposed to be located?
Is it supposed to be located by the pick-up on the sensor?
Or is supposed to be about 180 deg form the pick up?
I could send Pictures if that would help.
