Hello, I have a 1990 F-150 straight six 2wd. Would a ZF5 bolt up to a 300? What else would have to be changed on the truck? Would the computer have to be changed? Would this be a fairly simple swap or very difficult? Please give any ideas, pointers, and instructions with what else might need to be changed.
There were ZF's made to go behind the straight six. You'll probably find one in a late 80's--early 90's F-250 or 350. I dont know if the computer would have to be changed or not, but it seems likely as intensively computer-controlled as the E4OD is. Beyond that, there's pedals, clutch master cylinder, possibly a trans. crossmember and driveshaft (dont know if these need to be changed off the top of my head). The only electronics that the ZF needs to hook up to are a backp light switch and a clutch interlock switch ( so the bugger wont start in gear with the clutch engaged!). I'v done this in reverse order with an E4OD replacing a T-18 (dumbest thing i ever did). It's a fair amount of work to get all the little things right, you thing you're done when you tighten up the new tranny, but it's just starting! It's probably worth it to get rid of that @#$! E4OD though, just be ready for what's involved! Good luck.
WOAH THERE!
Sell your truck and just get a stick shift one, then convert it to a ZF5!
The ammount of trouble putting the clutch pedal and related equipment it is more trouble that you might believe!
You need a flywheel, clutch plate, pressure plate, hydraulic master, slave cyl, connecting hydraulic line, modify the drive line, and be sure the trans comes with the shifter as some dont as they assume you will use your old one.
The computer will think the tranny is failing (RPM's not changing when it tells the trans to shift) so it will reduce the available power so you can minimize dammage and limp home so you will need to swap the computer for one that came from a stick shift model.
Then you get to swap out the pedal assembly, and if provisions for the clutch master cylinder are not on your trucks fire wall, you will have to modify it to accept one (in just the right place), install all the hydraulic components, get them adjusted (assuming the placement is right for correct operation).
You might get lucky, if your cross member for the trans mount might work if it swaps around like some I have seen.
That and the plate in the floor might be there so you can swap it for the one for the stick shift to stick through.
It's so much easier to go stick to auto.
