I have a 99 7.3, i took off driving the other day and after about 10 mins the truck just dies like I shut the key off but everything was still on. I tried to restart it and it would fire for just a sec then die. I set for about 15 mins and tried again it fired up and ran about 5 mins then the same thing. I had a buddy hook it up to his scanner and it has a p0605 and another icp code.. We changed the icp then erased the codes.. Ran some rest through the scan took with the truck running and no codes so we took it for a drive made it about 20 mins away and same thing but this time has the p0605 code again. Could the pcm be bad? I also noticed the electric pump is always on all the time it will cycle at least 30 seconds every time the key is turned??. Anyone have any ideas, thanks
What was the ICP code, exactly? Is there a chip/programmer/tuner installed? The fuel pump will run continuously when the engine is running, and for 20 seconds if the key is turned on without starting the engine.
Sometimes a failing IPR will stop working when hot. Next time it happens dump a cup of ice on it, give it a minute to cool and try to start.
I don't know if this type of failure is due to an issue with the electric or mechanical part of the IPR, so if cooling it works I'd replace the IPR rather than rebuild it.
It's all stock no chips or runners or anything, it only is hard to start right after it dies but when it's cooled off it fires right off. The oil was changed about 3000 miles ago, my buddy works at peterbilt he changed the oil at work said they used delo 10 30. Its right at the full mark no coolant or fuel in the oil. When it's running it runs perfectly fine. I'll try the ipr tonight and see what that does. .thanks guys
I'd have to agree with everyone else, quite possibly the IPR. If that is the culprit you'll be looking at part number F81Z9C968AB... Hopefully it is simple seals like CampSpringsJohn suggested, if so the part number on those is 1807263C1.
Instead of messing around I just went down to Ford bought a new ipr still same thing idled in the drive way about an hour dies would start and die start and die let it sit about an hour started up ran fine for 20 mins then same stuff. Tried starting it died did that 3 or 4 times then it would just turn over so I hit a shot of starting fluid to see was it would do and it fired right off like it isn't getting fuel? Going to replace cps tonight and see what happens. Could it have a plugged return line maybe?
As long as you have that fuel press steady then it's probably not fuel issue. It's time to monitor sensors, pressures, and codes. You may have a low oil pressure to injectors or some other issue. What kind of scanner does your buddy have?
OTOH if that fuel pressure is at idle, then it's not going to be good enough on the road. I think the rule of thumb is minimum 45 psi at WOT. Lack of fuel can also throw a low ICP code.
