96 302 AWD 98K. Worst problem so far, the cruise button thingie on the steering wheel is loose. And it only gets 20MPG. Enough of this already! I'm not going to put up with this for more than another 100K miles or so.
I've got a 98 with 107K on it and am on a mission.....300K! You're an inspiration. Got any tips for longevity? I currenty use Mobil 1 and drive like an old lady.
I have had similar probs with my girls explorer. Its a limited 97 with the 4.0sohc and it had the intkae gasket go, awd give out, and the heater go which was a HUGE problem to fix! I can relate to everybody here cause it has had too many problems for me especially when she got kicked out of her house for buying a ford, but man do I love that truck! I still wouldnt trade it for anything else!
I bought my first Exploer new back in 91, and I've bough six more new ones since then. And, two new Exploers. The best of the first three was the 92, and then a pretty blue 95 XLT was so great and I never hasd a single problem with it. Although I go through these thing's like shoes, let me tell you why. I love most thing's about the Explorer other than their dependability. Take the 96 I owned that would decide to go WOT on me any time it felt likt it. Of course until Ford knew something was wrong the dealer beilived I was just some nut. The seats in mots of them would not make it into a Honda, because most of them were not made very well. Ever wonder why the seats never really do much good for your back, no matter how you set it up. Safty: OK, how about this. Take the 2001 Explorers. Did you know that in the event of a rear end collision, not only does the seats do you no good. When you rebound into the steering wheel and the air bag does not deploy if your like me you ask why not? Fords answer is that it's not made to do so in the event your hit in the rear. OK, so why didn't the seat belt lock and keep me from going into the dash, and smashing my face? Again, they are not made to lock in the event your hit from behind. Ok, so I ask myself why these don't do any good in a rear end collision. After all, busted necks do not come from your neck being slamed back. But rather by the forward rebound after it went south. So, safty is poor but they are getting a little better. I just bought in the last six months, two new 03 EB's. ONe for me, and one for my wife. They are, much better than the 01 I had, but ya know what? Both of them have a high pitched noise that comes when the AC is on and we are moving down the road. And on her rig, it has this funny noise in the front end that sounds like the lock up converter is not working right. But the dealer can't seem to find out why. On another note. Some jerk ended up tossing a lite butt from his car, and it landed inside the back window of my 03. I was on the freeway so had to wait a while before I could stop and get it out. Sheeesh, it had landed on the center rear seat. Can anyone tell me how leather can melt like plastic?? I mean with bubbles and all, just like the leather was made of plastic.
Why do I keep buying them? The size, the look, and the cost. The fact is, on the 03 they have done some really good thing;s and some really stupid ones. Who ever made the rear gate on these things?? How can mom lift the gate, unless she is made like a football player? And ya know what? Even I find it to be a tad heavy and tend to avoid it most of the times. The wheel spacing is that of an import car, so buying wheels for it is not easy. The idiot who made the new running boards should be made to have his mom use the truck a few times and then bob him on the head. Because, they serve no purpose at all. They are not out far enough to use getting in. But stick out just enough to make getting out something women do not care for. Has anyone seen how the bottom door seal comes undone? Both of ars have. And when will Ford make an automatic antena on these thing's. Come on guys it's 03 already. Also, a latching gas door is years past due. I love them and I hate them. But I keep buying them until Japan makes something that's as big has the power, and with the same room. Honda came clsoe, and look for them to start stealing people in the next three years. KNow why Honda even got in the game? They got tired of people trading in Accords on Explorers, because Honda had nothing in the same size. Ahhhhhhhh, FMC, better make some fast big changes, just like they lost the larger mini van (Windstar) war to Honda's Van. Japan is like this. They wait until they see where they can do a better job, and then they kick our butt. Take the Honda outboard engines. Everyone said there was no way to stick a V-teck in an outboard. Never say never, or you'll be watching some guys rear bumper. Thank you. I wish the very best to you and yours. Now excuse me while I go look at the New Ford's in this mornings paper. I dream of a Factory 350 HP Explorer, with the manners of the direction they are headed. Wish me luck with my dreams
Mine was a co truck, climbed nearly every mtn in the state, has over 220k on it, and has been a dream. Ford dealer wanted a couple grand for a "noisy bearing" in the front carrier. Last week, started a shimmy, replaced the right bearing/wheel hub assy, and there went the front axel noise!
Nothing major other than typical clutch replacement, and normal maintenance. Highly recommend!
