I'm going to try and lift that tilt lever/gear with a screwdriver while I give it a yank.
I'm wondering what's going to happen with those two heavy springs though... They seem to be stuck in there pretty darn good. Or they're hooked on something...
I can still get the internals back into the column, so I could still reassemble the three allen head bolts. It would be a step backwards, but if I would help I would likely do it.
Now I'm curious where the heck I'm going to get another shift tube from... That's my mission tomorrow on my lunch hour. Any help is appreciated. Quickly checked Rock Auto.. nothing on there as far as I can see which is surprising. Might be looking in the wrong spot
LMC truck has solid column stuff for sale, but it doesn't appear that you can buy a shift tube for a tilt column. Wonder if I disassembled my straight column if I would find out that it's the exact same shift tube as the tilt columns, with just different internals?
Anywho... here's the answer to my question above about interchangability between the years:
"The '78-'79 columns themselves are the same with auto tranny...the difference is how it hooks up at the end of the column. The 4WDs have a knuckle shaft & rag joint, whereas the 2WDs just have a rag joint. All automatic columns are the same and all standard columns are the same, each fitting F100 through F350. If you get a 4X4 column it will not have the 2WD coupler but you can use one from a '78-'79 van tilt." - Fordification.com
With adjustable steering column (only the wheel tilts), the A/T shift tube (E3TZ-7212-M replaced D8TZ-7212-E 23.48" long) is the same 1978/79 F100/350 2WD/4WD & Bronco.

is some great information. Thanks so much ND!
I had no idea that all of the shift tubes for nearly all of the 78/79 dentside vehicles was the same.
Looks like I could tear down my 1978 straight tube column and rebuild the 1979 4x4 tilt column with the 1978 straight shift tube. When I do this, I'm probably going to post up a rebuild thread with some better pics/info than in this thread. Awesome news to hear I can potentially have 2 tilt columns
I've already got a tilt column my 1978 lariat donor cab, so it's going to get swapped out into the 4x4 so I'm up and running again

You have to pay attention to the entire post, you eliminated the above.
Fixed steering column shift tubes are not the same as the adjustable (tilt} steering column shift tube.
7212: Here's the page from the parts catalog listing all the 1973/79 A/T shift tubes. It shows the original D8TZ-7212-E ADJUSTABLE STEERING COLUMN TUBE.
If you want to go new I'm pretty sure Jeffs Bronco graveyard has them. If I were you I'd just check around Kijiji for somebody parting out a old ford or just go for a drive around the country. There are literally hundreds of old Ford trucks parked in bushes behind farmyards across Saskatchewan. Lots of guys will sell the whole truck for $100 or a couple cases of beer. Lol.

Super tempting to go brand new, but I don't want to spend the $$$ on a new wheel when I've got a 1978 tilt column in good shape sitting in my attic.
I did take your suggestion and look at JBG and on ebay too, but everything is just soooo darn pricey!
Hard to tell from the photo, but I believe what you have broken there, is the die-cast shift collar. The shift tube is simply a steel tube and not what you show in the pic....it would be hard to break. So shop for the collar, which I believe is readily available. Also, be sure and put that tit mechanism back together before you assemble the column. Its a "stand-alone" assembly. With the heavy spring, its a two person job to hold it together while inserting the tilt bushings. I may have some photos, as I just restored a 78 column....but lots of nuts and bolts since then...so my memory......!

I believe you're both correct! Looks like I could rebuild the original column now if I wanted to
Thanks for the P/N ND!
And good eye resonateur! If you have any pics or a link to your thread, please post them up.
EDIT:Here's a question for ND. What years/other vehicles is the Cruise Control buttons/wires interchangeable with other Ford Vehicles of the same era (steering wheel parts only)? There are a few local postings for 1979-1980 Granada/LTD Cruise control switches (Off/On Set+Accel/Coast - Note that there's no "Resume" button like the 1980+ era had.)

Nice! I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for some cruise control parts. I want to see if I can set up the cruise control in the dash or externally from the steering wheel so I can have an aftermarket steering wheel but still have cruise. Thanks ND!
How the heck does that little plastic piece inside the shift fork (at the bottom of the column) come out so I can change out the 2WD arm (to the transmission) for the 4WD arm???
I'm stumped! It doesn't want to budge and I'm afraid I'll break something if I keep pushing on the shift fork on the column...
How the heck does that nylon bushing fit inside the selector lever (at the bottom of the column) come out so I can change out the 2WD arm (to the transmission) for the 4WD arm???
