I have a 2006 ford explorer with the 6clcy, axle code 45, GVWR of 6180, front GAWR 2960 rear GAWR 3400 how can I figure out what weight trailer I can pull without damaging the truck? thanks in advance guys.
Looks like with 3.55 rear differential, you are around 3200# max, with 3.73 rear differential you are slightly over 5000# max. See Ford 2006 towing guide below...
Also remember that the salesman at the trailer dealership is NOT a reliable source of information on what you can or should be towing. They make more money on larger trailers.

Second this. I let my wife and a salesman talk me into a 4600# 26' TT to pull with a 2015 Explorer. Trailer rating of 5000#, total gross of about 10,700. Problem is Explorer weighs about 5100# itself. Add 5 passengers and gear, and I go about 12,500. I will say, we have the sport, and the 3.5tt ecoboost is more than capable. Actually gives my 7.3 a run for tge money. And plenty of brakes. But.... you feel the weight in the suspension, and the wheel base is a bit short. Add 500-800 pounds to the dry weight of the trailer, and don't forget passenger weight. Check the tow guide, find max combined gross, subtract passenger weight, the mentioned 500-800# in gear, and now you have an idea on trailer weight.
What all of the above have said. My with can load up 1000lbs of "Essentials" in a hour without breaking a sweat. Me I just hook up, unhook, drive. Oh, guess there is that 100lbs of "beverages" that I throw in. Water is a little over 8lbs a gallon, if you camp without full hook ups and fill 3 30 gallon holding tanks that's a cra*load of weight. Anyway smaller truck=white knuckles, big truck= I'm kind of sleepy how much further.
Agree, it's surprising how much weight you can pack into even a modest trailer. If you carry firewood, that can add up fast as well.
And if you like canned beverages, a six-pack is only a hair under five pounds. I drink quite a few six packs . . . .
