Driving down the interstate 65 mph pulling the 5th wheel, engine shuts down like you cut the switch off. Edge shows ICP 85% and 300 psi while cranking and code 2623. Towed truck to Ford dealer where they ordered an IPR to be delivered the next morning. I got camper towed to campground just down road. Went to the dealer the next morning and they said it started up fine an hour or so after I left, and ran fine that morning on a test drive. Tech thought it was a piece of trash that cleared itself out. I went to the parts counter to pickup the IPR while trying to decide to change it or just take it with me, I had my tools and the IPR socket with me. Unfortunately Ford sent an oil pressure sensor tagged as an IPR valve, so much for that idea. The tech gave me a known good used IPR, I paid my bill and headed down the road. 50 miles down the road it quit again. Got it off the road, let it cool some and started to pull the IPR to swap it only to find I didn't have a 3/8" universal. Back on a rollback to the next exit and a Diesel shop with a Motorcraft IPR in stock. 9am the next morning shop called and said truck was fixed but wanted me to put some miles on it to be sure. The screen on the original IPR was intact with no trash and had been replaced with the new style screen 30,000 miles ago. Other than oil changes, nothing had been done to the oil system since then. I put 60 miles on the truck up and down the interstate @ 75 mph and it ran great, hooked up to the camper and drove it home.
It could be my imagination, but the truck feels like it is making more power, otherwise I had no indication it was about to fail. We were on the road for 2 weeks and 3500 miles, all but the last 300 were trouble free with fuel burn averaging 11.4 mpg pulling just over 9000 lbs scaled.
Big thanks to J. D. and the people at Chipola Ford in Marianna, FL and Shiver Diesel Injection in Midway, FL., great people and fair prices. Compared to where we had been, we could not have broke in a better spot.
It's interesting to note in the ford manual there is no test for the IPR other than to replace it, if the truck runs, the old IPR was bad, if it still doesn't start, replace the HPOP.
The best part, after 2 trips on a rollback in 2 days in +95* heat with 2 dogs my better half is not only still speaking to me but wanting to know how soon we can go again. Life is good.
Glad it worked out. I'm 30 miles north of Chipley. Would have loved to had a get together. If it happens again in that area give a shoutout. I keep a few parts that I replaced that didn't need replacing :-( like a IPR
Thanks, no plans to break on the road again but you never know, we go to Port St Joe for long weekends. The second shut down was in the middle of the 18 wheeler wreck that shut down eastbound I10 for several hours.
