So I am recharging my AC system after the liquid line popped off the fitting and vented the entire system (last time I let a shop attach a line or charge it.) I am ordering a set of mastercool gauges/can tap and I can rent the vac pump. I will be putting on a new accumulator.
My question is how do I figure out how much oil to put in and is it safe to have a little too much oil?
And how much refrigerant does it take? I don't have my service manuals with me.
just got done going through all of my chilton manual for ya. they say they cannot disclose information unless you are EPA 609 certified, due to legalities from venting the system. sorry for that news in open to public manuals.
will be looking into doing the whole conversion the way you did myself, sounds like you did great work of what you had your hands on.
Pre-1996 the capacities were 33 ounces of refrigerant and 7 ounces of oil.
In 96 they upped the capacities to 38oz of refrigerant and 9oz of PAG oil.
Speaking as the condenser, lines, and evaporator are all the same from 94 to 96 I suggest you go with the raised capacities for the biggest cooling benefit.

curiousity, where did you get those numbers? so that way i know where i can look to find good answers.
it does refer to all AC refridgerants. 134a might just be in 608. dont remember differences in them, just know i got them and can work on any system legally.
Thanks for the info on charge capacity, I knew they changed it I couldn't remember when, and my sticker is for R12.
Would there be a problem with just putting another 7oz of oil in even if there's already oil in there? I know at least some came out because everywhere it sprayed is oily. And a fair amount will be in the accumulator when I replace that.

Too much oil would reduce cooling efficiency. If you aren't sure how much is in there, flush the system and restart.
I appreciate the advice,
Normally I would tear apart everything and flush properly, but unfortunately the house I'm staying at for the summer doesn't look kindly on dismantling vehicles in the driveway. I guess I will vacuum out the system and charge with 7oz of oil to be safe. I realize this will hurt the efficiency but I know it lost a fair amount of oil when the line blew and there will be another couple ounces in the accumulator. I hate not being able to do things properly.
Definitely the last time I let a shop charge the AC....
