Hi,
Im having some odd electrical starting issues after installing my new starter over the weekend. Most the time it fires up like it should, but sometimes when i turn the key nothing at all happens. No wts light, no clicking from the gp controler, no e-pump, no starter engagement and the radio clock resets like the batteries were unhooked.
I am going to go back through all the electical connections that i touched to make sure they are clean and tight, but i wondered if there was anything else i should check? I was planning on replacing my GP controller since last time i had the doghouse off i noticed it was buzzing louder than normal......not sure if there is any connection to this issue though.
Also, does my e250 have a fender mounted starter relay? If so, anyone know where to look for it? Thanks
I think I might have got it worked out. The starter I installed was a PowerMaster 9050. It turns the van over extremely fast compared to the old OEM style one, but there was an issue with the connections. The positive post where the positive battery cable connects to it had a protective plastic shield around it. The shield was tall enough that it was keeping the cable from being seated all the way on the post. Tightening it down would tighten the edges of the battery cable against the top of the plastic shield instead of seating it. I trimmed this back and it now seats completely. I also cleaned my battery cable connection/posts, coated then with terminal protector spray and individually recharged both my batteries. I haven't been able to recreate the bad behavior and I also noticed that the voltage drop when I engage the GP system looks normal now. Before I was seeing a large drop.

Just sayin
I looked behind my passenger headlight. I have my voltage regulator and then a small gray box with wires attached. Is the Gray box the relay? See the pic
From the onset it sounded like a loose/bad connection at the battery(s).
Then you mentioned the glow plug Vdrop and that kinda settles it. Nothing on the starter would affect the glowplugs.
Glad you got her working again! Proper starter speed is awesome when you've gotten used to a slow, old starter.
They don't go bad often. A common part people replace to "freshen things up" but unless it has failed I'd leave it alone. Something to trouble shoot if the "no start" comes back.
