I've got a nice (rust free survivor) style side box ($250) to pick up in Yakima, I made a package deal with a '67 frame to get the twin i-beam and power steering set-up. The box is ready to go and I'm getting delayed on the frame (he's still got to strip the body). Is it worth 150 amd or do i just take the box and call it a day and find one at a wrecker or elsewhere. It's the last major component I need and I'm anxious to get it back to canada before the rain/snow comes.
Howdy, I was planning to do a disc/power booster conversion to the '67 frame but if I got a complete 73 and up frame it could save some dollars. I've considered trying to find a 65 or 66 then I don't have to mess with the front cab mounts but power steering mods seem challenging/pricey for that application. As far as what I'm building.. I've got a 64 Merc longbed with a 1970 429 and a C6 floor shift setup. The cab and bed are absolutely rotten with rust. I just dragged up a donor 62 F100 from washington that has an excellent cab but it has the 57-60 style box. I have bought an excellent rust free box from washington and will drag it home in the next week or so. I want to lower the truck, and build the engine as well as get rid of all rust except for exterior patina. I would say rat rod, but low budget do everything myself without cutting and hacking original ford steel too much, is more accurate. I have a running straight six with a 3 on a tree, 57-60 box and many other leftover parts I'll be selling along the way to keep the build rolling.
OK, FYI 64 ended the straight axle truck, and in 65 the I-beam was introduced. The cab/chassis from 65-79 are bolt hole exchange from the rear cab mount to the front bumper. AFAIK the differences between the Canadian Merk and the AM Ford is badging. Make a plan, get this stuff planned out rather than running here and yon buying up a bunch of parts that you don't need. There are several guys here on this forum that can help, if you share more in detail of what you are hoping to do.
Thanks for the info. By exchange do you mean the cab mounts to front bumper are the same or different in the 65-79? As well the reason I have leftover parts is because I bought 2 complete trucks and being in canada it is difficult to find original metal thats not full of holes. The box I purchased was in such better shape than what I had it was a no brainer. My biggest challenge at this point is to get away from the straight axle as the cost of mustang 2 front ends or crown vics is significant so a donor frame would be cost effective.
Josh, The cab and front clip still connected from a 79 will bolt up to a 65 chassis and vice versa. 64 and backward is a different deal. It can be made to fit but not bolt on.
In 73 Ford added 4in to the rear of the cab behind the rear mounts, making the wheel base longer. That will have to be delt with if you plan on using a 73-79 chassis.
Ok thanks John. Might just run the straight axle until i can afford a crown vic front end. I've owned straight axle, strong arm steering ford vehicles before and except for parallel parking its manageable.
